Definitely a must, January 26, 2000
This review is from: Gre Powerprep Software: Test Preparation for the Gre General Test, Version 2.0 (CD-ROM)
This will provide you with an extremely accurate picture of how you will do on test day. More importantly, practicing with a test identical to the type you will actually encounter can give you an extra edge on speed, which is a key consideration. I recommend taking the practice pre-test questions and BOTH practice CATs provided with the software at least twice each (I found the questions did change) and reviewing your mistakes until you understand where you went wrong. I also recommend supplementing this with the printed text put out by ETS, the ARCO 30 days to the GRE (for its easy, concise "mapping" strategy for the Analytical section; its Verbal and Quant. sections are kind of lame.) and at least two other general prep books. (Kaplan, Barron's, and The GRE For Dummies were all pretty useful--especially for the Quant. Memorize all those special right triangles! And be sure you know how to manipulate exponents. ETS had the best verbal practice passages. Most of the books had pretty good long lists of obscure words to memorize.) When I took the GRE, I scored 800 on the Verbal, 780 on the Quantitative, and 700 on the Analytical--and yes, I am indecently pleased about it. This is also an increment of proof that determinedly studying/practicing for the GRE can significantly raise your scores.

No explanations = No help in preparing, March 8, 2001
By A Customer
I can't give this software a high rating. Yes, I do feel it was an invaluable resource, and a "must-have"for anyone prepping for the GRE, but that's only because it has the real questions from ETS, and two real, timed GRE simulation tests. These tools give you experience using the actual GRE software you'll encounter at the testing site, and I found that preparation very helpful. BUT (and, yes, this definitely is a BIG BUT!), this "PowerPrep" software gives absolutely NO explanations on how to answer various types of questions. For example, I know I'm weak in the "analytical" section, and all the software did was confirm that. I did the practice questions, got them wrong, and then was frustrated because I had no idea WHY I got them wrong. My advice to prospective testers is to buy this software for the practice with GRE software and real sample questions, but definitely also buy yourself a book that explains how to figure out logic questions, basic math, etc.

Great software!, July 5, 2000
This review is from: Gre Powerprep Software: Test Preparation for the Gre General Test, Version 2.0 (CD-ROM)
Until today I was skeptical about the sofware's power to "predict" actual test scores but I took the "real" test and let me tell you-my verbal score was 10 points lower that the practice one while the quantitative and analytical were identical to the practice scores! It is amazing-like taking a glimpse at the GRE ahead of time. I'd strongly recommend this software to anyone preparing for the GRE-combined with a textbook (I personally prefer Kaplan and Arco) it becomes a powerful weapon in mastering the GRE. The Kaplan CD is also very, very good, especially if you are scoring in the 90+ percentile. It provides a lot of hard questions for practice. Buy this software, it's well worth your money!
