Product Description

Fun and easy art-appreciation activities abound in this resource that features 75 American artists from colonial times to the present. A brief biography for each artist tells why his or her work is important, and a kid-tested art activity tries out the artist’s approach. For Georgia O’Keeffe, the activity is a desert painting; for Frederic Remington, a face cast; for Leroy Nieman, a sketch of athletes; and for James Whistler, a clay engraving. Projects stress the creative process and encourage kids to try unusual techniques such as block printing, soak-stain, and stone carving as they learn about architecture, drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture. A resource guide provides a glossary of art terms, a list that groups the artists by style, a list of the artists’ birthdays, an index of art supplies, and websites for viewing art online.

5.0 out of 5 stars MY MY -- this book is ASTOUNDING! COLOR COLOR COLOR, August 15, 2008
By Peggy Clayton (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
I have quite a few of MaryAnn Kohl's books, all of them full of great ideas that are easy to set up and great for children to produce art in their own way. Kudos. All of them with very nice black line drawings. But get ready!!! Now, here she comes with a full color book that is absolutely astounding for the price. Quality artworks by great American masters are shown [alongside works by children who have taken the style of that artist and expressed it in their own work]. Still "Process, not Product" oriented. I am completely astounded by the quality of this book. And still, the projects require only basic art materials everyone has or can easily find. You've got to see this to believe it. I checked her website, and there are free sample pages to download there. www dot brightring dot com/ greatamericanartists dot html (Amazon doesn't like urls used so translate). Astounding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Using Great American Artists for Kids Across the Curriculum, August 19, 2008
By Sally A. Parsons (White Bear Lake, MN) - See all my reviews
Great American Artists for Kids is a wonderful book that can easily be applied across the curriculum to support other disciplines. Not only do our students learn about American heritage and the artists that have created it; but they can explore the techniques and methods of those artists. We find that the projects in the book fit into most areas of study and are relatively inexpensive. The best thing about the book is that it introduces our students to the artists they are most likely to encounter in life.
