This review is from: The Great American Gentleman: William Byrd of Westover in Virginia--His Secret Diary for the Years 1709-1712 (Paperback)
This is a heavily edited version of William Byrd's so-called "secret diary." I purchased a copy because I wanted to get his entries where he mentioned some of my ancestors like Robert Bolling and his son Robert and Richard Cocke and also for some behind-the-scenes of life in that area of Virginia. Most of the references to my relatives are there, but it is hard to figure out what may he been edited out. I keep wondering whether I am missing something about a relative, the weather or some other historic event or mention. I can't say that this version is very good reading as a diary on the whole.
