Book Description

April 1990 0962529001 978-0962529009
Reprint of the 1940 original, with a new introduction by William Hanchett, professor of history at San Diego State University. The classic history of Lincoln's assassination. Bryan spent years studying and researching this neglected period in American History. In addition to undertaking a more thorough search of contemporary newspapers, Bryan had access to previously unknown and unused material, including the John T. Ford papers. Mr. Bryan was also fortunate to obtain first-hand information from two men who knew Booth, and a signed statement from Booth's nephew who had never before spoken for publication. Cover art includes a previously unpublished photograph of Lincoln's funeral procession in Chicago.

Editorial Reviews

From Scientific American

In the clumsy and inconsistent mass of Lincoln assassination literature, few books have stood above George S. Bryan's 1940 classic ...The Great American Myth is a masterful effort...Bryan shows an objectivity that most writers seem to lack.

Review

...a Lincoln book that has something important and original to say. This book casts more light on Lincoln's law practice and tells us more about the kind of lawyer Lincoln was that anything else I have ever seen. -- Pulitizer Prize-winning historian David H. Donald.
