Selecting sixteen of the world's best short stories must be a tremendous challenge. Choosing appropriate readers is probably an even greater undertaking. This first volume of three has, in some cases, risen to the occasion and, in some cases, has not. Stories by well-known, lesser known, and unknown writers have been chosen. Some of those chosen haven't withstood the test of time. Others are dated or are simply not of interest to a modern audience. Unfortunately, some of the readers are also poorly chosen; thus, a good story sometimes suffers at the narrator's presentation.
