Book Description

March 1, 1997
Healthful, easy-to-follow recipes bring the refreshing flavors of juice-bar smoothies into any kitchen
-- Smoothies are the newest trend in healthy drinks coast to coast
-- Juice bars charge up to $3.25 for a 24-ounce smoothie, but they can be made at home in just five minutes with a standard blender

Horrified by the preservatives and additives in commercial baby foods, Gabriel Constans sought a nutritious alternative for his young daughter. With a simple kitchen blender, he created healthful, tasty drinks from fresh fruits and vegetables, and was delighted at how easily his daughter consumed them. Now all the rage at juice bars -- which are springing up almost as quickly as coffee bars did in the '80s -- smoothies are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, and a refreshing way to get some of the five to ten daily servings of fruits and vegetables recommended by the USDA. As an added bonus, they're delicious and easy to make. Constans's book contains advice on blenders and ingredients, and of course, a variety of his tried-and-true recipes, including:
-- The Morning Lift-off bananas, orange juice, cooked oatmeal, Grape Nuts, tofu, honey, an egg, and wheat germ
-- The Luscious Lassi: plain yogurt, fresh mango, milk and honey
-- The Mahatma: curry, raisins, cashew bits, plain yogurt, milk, and brown rice
-- The Picasso: bananas, raspberries, grapes, orange juice, cranberry juice, tofu, protein powder, peanut butter, ginger powder, honey, and vanilla

Constans's smoothies take less time to make than a trip through a fast-food drive-thru -- and they're far healthier. He also includes chapters on "Decadent Desserts" and even "For Adults Only".

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is fun and good, August 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Great American Smoothies (Mass Market Paperback)
I was intimidated at first. There are ingredients that I had to go out of my way to find, but they are good and contribute to making smoothies that are really great. I've lost weight because I drink some of the smoothies in place of a meal. I also get a lot more fruit into my diet this way... I find that I can do all the work with my blender. For instance, if the recipe calls for chopped apricot, instead of chopping the apricot myself I put that in the blender first and let the blender do the chopping, then add the rest of the ingredients. If I add things that need chopping first I get a smoother smoothie. A very good book. Worth every penny.

2.0 out of 5 stars Recipes are fine, but the book is hard to use., April 27, 2002

This review is from: Great American Smoothies (Mass Market Paperback)
All of the drinks have cute names like The Picasso, Bottoms Up, etc, which don't give a clue as to what is in the recipe. If you want to use up your last mango, for instance, you have to either page laboriously thru each recipe or memorize the book. Neither the table of contents nor the index cover the ingredients.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book!, June 23, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Great American Smoothies (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a wonderful book, one of the best I've ever seen. It not only has great smoothie recipes, but it also has steps to follow before drinking a smoothie, like listening to it and smelling it one nostril at a time. It also has information about smoothies, information on the ingredients, information about the great smoothie goddess, and information about each smoothie and the benefits of it. This is a great, humorous, informative book with the most wonderful smoothie recipes I've ever tasted. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in having a new, healthy, really good tasting drink
