This review is from: Great American Speeches: 80 Years of Political Oratory (1997) (VHS Tape)
Whether you're a lifelong history buff or new to the study, the documentary Great American Speeches: 80 Years of Political Oratory, is sure to inspire. This comprehensive collection contains some of the best examples of American political speech ever compiled, glued together with a thoughtful narration, provided by Jody Powell.

Almost every second of this documentary is gripping, taking the viewer from Theodore Roosevelt to Jesse Jackson, with a multitude of occasionally forgotten, yet hugely influential names, introduced along the way. Through the broad selection of speakers, the producers illuminate the universality of many of our present day concerns. At the same time, viewers get a whole new perspective on oratory styles, and how those styles factor into current political speeches.

The producers' invitation to "Put yourself in the front row of history" lives up to its promise, with sizable clips from speeches made by Charles E. Coughlin, Huey Long, Barbara Jordon, and Mario Cuomo. Watching the maturation of speakers such as John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan is an education, as is viewing the exchanges of Joseph McCarthy and Joseph Welch during the McCarthy hearings. For those with a lifelong love of history, watching Great American Speeches: 80 Years of Political Oratory will re-ignite your passion. For those new to the study- get ready to soak it all in.

Suitable for grades 7 and up, more apt to be well received by grades 10 and up.
