It really does take some practice, but once you've got it down, you can cut like the one on the package. That's not the hard part though. It can sometimes be very difficult to actually bread the thing and fry it, but thats not really this products fault. Either way, if you want to make a cheap blooming onion, this is the way to go.

I don't own this, but I am a fan of bloomin' onions and I tried many recipes until I found this. This is actually a culmination of a couple of things I discovered. If you don;t have white pepper, you can use black pepper instead. I also like to add a teaspoon of cayenne pepper to mine to make it really spicy, but that is a modification to the Bloomin' Onion recipe. Here it is:

Bloomin' Onion Recipe
Ingredients

1 cup Oil, for deep frying
1 large sweet onion
1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon Old Bay seasoning
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon white pepper
1/2 cup milk
1 egg, slightly beaten

Optional: Mild ranch dressing or spicy barbecue dressing, for serving

Prepare the Onion

Peel the skin off the onion, leaving the root end intact. Cut a small slice off the top. Starting at the top of the onion make a cut down 1 side toward the root, stopping 1/2-inch from the bottom. Make additional cuts at 1/8-inch intervals until there are cuts across the entire top of the onion.

Rotate the onion so the cuts are horizontal to you. Continue to cut at 1/8-inch intervals, forming a checkerboard pattern across the entire top of the onion. To help the onion "bloom," gently spread the "petals."

The onion will come out better if, after slicing the petals, you float the onion upside down in ice water for fifteen minutes. The water must be as cold as possible. It will spread more easily, and lose fewer petals. This is how Outback gets it to bloom so nicely.

Preheat the Oil

Heat oil in a heavy saucepan or Dutch oven with tall sides to 350 degrees F. The oil should only come halfway up the sides of the pan, but should completely immerse the whole onion.

Prepare the Batter and Coat

Combine the dry ingredients in a one gallon Ziploc bag. Combine milk and beaten egg in a small, deep bowl. Dip the onion into the egg mixture and then place it into the f Ziploc containing the flour mixture. Seal it and shake the mixture until the onion is evenly coated. Now it is ready to cook.

Cook the Onion

When the oil has reached 350 degrees F, carefully submerge the onion in the oil and fry for 10 minutes, turning as needed, until a golden color. Watch out on this step as it is easy to have the hot oil rise and overflow the pot. I use a tall cooking pot to do this so it cannot overflow when I put the onion into the hot oil. After 10 minutes (or until brown) remove and drain the excess oil from the onion with the onion upside down. I use three paper towels to collect the excess oil.

Onion Rings as an Alternative

For a twist on this, you can make crispy thin onion rings too. Just slice an onion real thin, break apart the rings, dip them in the batter and place them in a gallon zip lock bag to coat them evenly. Then fry them at 350 degrees F until they turn brown. Super easy and delicious!

Easy to use. cut onions perfect. This made the cutting so much easier. I ordered the powder mix for the coating. They were really good.

This onion cutter makes a beautifully cut onion. However, there are several things you have to be careful of. Once the onion is cut, the blade is very difficult to reverse out of the onion. You will need an extra person in the kitchen with you to achieve this step. I attempted it by myself for the first onion and couldn't do it so I flipped it over to push it out. I sliced my finger pretty badly on the blade and I barely touched the blade. They do warn you in several places, on the box, on the insert, and in the manual that the blades are extremely sharp....Heed their warning. I also purchased several different brands of coating mix as the first one I tried failed miserably. I had the same result with the other brands too. I then looked for a recipe to make my own coating and the result was the same. I have attempted four onions and so far none have been successful. I can't deny that the product itself is excellent for cutting the onion but if you are looking forward to a county-fair-style bloomin' onion....save yourself the time, aggravation and money. I wasted over 30 dollars worth of ingredients in my attempts. I will never again complain about the $7 that they charge at the fairs for a bloomin' onion.

Wow. Can't believe this item is $50 new. Got mine at a garage sale new in box for $1. I think the trick to success with this is not to use too large of an onion. Soak the onion in ice water after cutting it for a couple of hours and then after breading the onion, freeze it for a couple of more hours. Using this method will ensure that the onion blooms properly and the batter stays on the onion when frying. Be sure your oil is very hot 400 degrees or even slightly higher. Use peanut oil so the oil won't burn. The semi-frozen onion will quickly drop the oil temperature and if your starting point is too low ( like 350 ) you'll end up with a greasy onion.
The machine itself does what it's suppose to and is built well enough to last a long time. One caveat though. There is no way to sharpen the blades and eventually they will become dull and render this product useless.

I do wish these were still being made, it is getting more difficult to locate them all the time. The Great American Steakhouse Onion machine makes an excellent blooming onion but is not effort free, and they do not last forever. We use these in our restaurant every day and we need to purchase several new ones each year. This is a good product for the price as the more durable machines on the market many, many times more expensive.

I already had one; I like it so much; works very well.
Now I had bought and gave to my friend. It comes with some good recipes.

The machine arrived well ahead of the estimated delivery date I was given. It has not been used yet because we are waiting for the sweet onions to show up in our local groceries.
