This band is just kick ass. Period. This album is brutal from start to finish, and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because this band's latest cd, "Hunter" is even better than this one. That one is a definite 5 star album. Check it out first, but definitely get this one as well. As for the person a few reviews down the list who claims to not hear any resemblence to Meshuggah at all....ARE YOU KIDDING ME? If you stripped the vocals from these songs, you couldn't get more Meshuggah sounding if you tried!!! A Life Once Lost=Meshuggah's guitars + Lamb of God's (New American Gospel era) vocals. That equals one crushing experience.

Well, I've seen these guys live a good 6 or 7 times.. completely incredible.

Yea the cd might sound a little repetitive at first, since they use the same style of guitar through the whole cd pretty much; but, seriously, listen to it a second time... unbelievable. These guys will get you moving in your seat.

If you get a chance see them live. Incredible.

obviously the way alol play the riffs on this album (bending the strings) sounds very similar to meshuggah, but oh well it is an incredibly pummeling album none the less,and anyone who is a meshuggah fan should find it very enjoyable to listen to this album ,and i think the only reason people are bitchin about it is because they apparently think that alol are going to steal what meshuggah has, and believe me that will never happen..so if u dont have this cd go buy it ecspecially if you love meshuggah and sidewinder bending type riffs like meshuggah use ever so frequently..

I have listened to meshugga...and personally i dont think that they are ripping them off. ALOL's lyrics are a lot more ominous and the album itself has a more organic sound to it than meshugga's mechanic sounding riffs. ALOL are far more hardcore influenced as well, there are quite good "dancey" bits. The artwork is pretty nifty also, done by Jacob Bannon. There are also some great pearls of genius thrown in there if you LISTEN TO THE ALBUM MORE THAN ONCE. (hint:listen to "...in anything under the sun")

first of all i love this band.especially live.second, i love meshugga.alol does at first sound like meshugga and they are definatly influenced by them but alol's sound is much more organic and obviously more "hardcore" and i think more southern.they are also not nearly as technical as meshugga.the only thing that gets to me is the solos.they are definatly a meshugga rip off and i dont like that.i dont understand why they did that.but all in all i think their sound is differnt enough to be valid and anyone that knows whats up w/ both bands should be able to tell the difference and i would think appreciate it.except for the solos...i just dont get that.but oh well..they're freakin awesome.i highly recommend you see them live.its relentless.

I actually went to high school with the drummer of this band, and I can say without thought, he was the best musician to come out of Wall High School in a damn long time.. thats for sure. Their music is hard, edgy and creative as all hell... and they are all really tight musicians. They definately have a long and prosperous career in front of them. Buy this album! One of the best of the year in this category.

A Great Artist is the only recording I've heard of A Life Once Lost and although the record is excellent, its still a blatent Meshuggah ripoff. The formula for every song is the same; offtime guitar riffs with Thomas Haake imitation drumming. Even the vocals sound like that of Meshuggah (but in an odd occurance, are actually better). I give this band credit for their talent and, because of that, I gave this recording 4 stars. But in the future, they shouldn't wear their influences so blatenly on their sleeve. Still, these guys write some pretty awsome riffs and if they can develop a style more of their own, they'll be able hold their own against any band, including Meshuggah!

Yes, they sound like Meshuggah. So what? You know all those killer groovy, head pounding riffs that Meshuggah weave into their songs? Well, "A Great Artist" is a full length cd of those grooves. I'd place the influence of this music back in the "None" era. Here's wishing more bands would sound like Meshuggah....there would be less sucky music out there.

When I listen to A Great Artist, then something by Meshuggah (Nothing is the album I think is closest in style), I enjoy the differences. ALOL clearly has hardcore influences with their Meshuggah framework. It's a lower-brow sound, easier to bob your head to and just relax while listening to.

Recommended if you like hardcore, meshuggah, or techno.

A Great Artist is by far satisfying through and through. I picked up Hunter first and after that I didn't expect this album to be parallel to Hunter's perfection. But this album really impressed me. I've been listening to this for about 3 months now and I'm still not tired of it. I advise you to keep the cd handy in your car, or i suggest to keep it on your Ipod playlist. You will want to listen to this album again from time to time.

"Surreal Attrocities" is such an epic song. Thats what drew me to this album. ALOL has a new sound that is edgy and relentless. Thats the only way I can describe it. Other favorites are "The Change Came Suddenly", "Maudlin", and "The Wicked Will Rot".

If you liked Hunter, then theres no way you can't enjoy this album. But remember that ALOL takes a minute to grow on you, and when it starts growing it entangles and renders you addicted to the guitar riffs.
