Book Description

Remember the nut-covered, pink-colored cheese balls served at grandma’s house for the holidays? Well, these are not your grandma’s cheese balls. Updated for contemporary tastes, Michelle Buffardi’s cheese balls come in both savory and sweet flavors, like cheddar, blue cheese, and Buffalo wing sauce, or Bing cherry, rum, and pecan. And cheese balls are just part of the story. Many of the recipes, photographed in gorgeous full color, are in adorable shapes for all kinds of occasions, such as an Easter egg, Thanksgiving turkey, Christmas ornament, or a football for a Super Bowl party. Other designs are just plain fun, like the Nacho Cat, a Wise and Cheesy Owl, or one that looks like a pizza fresh from the oven. There is so much interest in bringing old-fashioned foods back into style, and this is no exception. Perfect for food lovers with crafty flair or anyone who loves to entertain, this book, with more than fifty inventive recipes and designs, is sure to be turned to again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for holiday entertaining November 2, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
We entertain at our home for friends and family on most holidays and usually we do sort of a pot-luck type set-up for food. Everyone brings something so we end up having all kinds of fun foods to share. Our family friends are so much more creative than I am when it comes to the foods they bring. I tend to buy or cook typical foods, and they all come up with such neat crafty-like appetizers. So when I saw this cheese ball book, I knew I just had to get it. It's filled with really simple yet really unique ideas for decorative and delicious cheese balls. Examples include a Ham and Cheese Easter Egg, a Cranberry and Rosemary Christmas Ornament and an adorable Chilly Penguin cheese ball that's made with blue cheese and poppy seeds.

These are exactly the kinds recipes I was looking to make. Decorative and using a wide variety of ingredients. You'll be using so much more than just cheese, seasonings and mixed nuts. They are the kinds of recipes that make everyone stop and go "Oh that's so neat!". Also, while the holiday cheese balls are the ones I'm most interested in, there are far more than just Christmas or Easter recipes inside. There are wine cheese balls, veggie cheese balls, and even a whole chapter of desert balls, like the Oreo Cheesecake Truffle ball. All having ornate and fun plating designs. The recipes in this book are very fun and creative. They're sure to be a hit any time you serve them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy and Fun September 3, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This small book if full of nice and easy recipes. The book not only contains recipes but also hints on how to decorate them and what goes with what. The recipes are organized by savory, sweet, etc. and each one comes with a full page picture (I also enjoy pictures, not only as inspiration but also as guide).

I tried only one, so far. The recipe used port wine (which I happened to have). It was really easy and the flavor was quite enjoyable.

This book is going to stay on my shelf. I am sure I will used it quite a bit. Ideal for small gatherings ... both as a host or as a guest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Balls of Cheese November 19, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
First, let me state that I have no intention of forming my food into the shape of little animals or sloppy sculptures of objects, like Christmas trees, primarily because as whimsical as it may be, it is simply too much food handling for my taste. I don’t want to think about other people touching my food, even with gloves on, and I assume others may feel the same way. And, I refuse to create food that looks like mice – it's just not happening. That said, I do not begrudge anyone the fun of spending time trying to get a lump of various types of cheeses melded together with cream cheese, spices and other delectable additions to be magically transformed into a cute animal.

The recipes were my main interest in this book and they are solid. There are combinations I would never have dreamed-up along with some twists on standards that are delicious. I prepared four cheese ball recipes and was pleased with all of them. Cranberry Cheddar Ball has complex flavors and is really good. The recipe calls for cranberry chutney, something I did not have on-hand, so I used some cranberry relish that I did have on hand. Still sweet and savory so the substitution worked well. If neither item is in the pantry I wouldn’t hesitate to use whole berry canned cranberry sauce (recipe calls for 2 tablespoons) with a half-teaspoon of balsamic vinegar, and a tiny pinch of ground all-spice half teaspoon added which should achieve something close to the original.

Next I prepared the Tricolor Pesto and Sun-Dried Tomato Terrine. The pesto used in the recipe can either be store bought or homemade.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tasty, cute, and fun to make October 28, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I like cheese balls and always have. Even the horrible ones that were all over the place when I was a kid.

This collection of sweet and savory are easy to make, and some of them are in fun shapes. The flavors are fantastic- instead of the super salty, unreasonably orange balls from cocktail parties past these are made using real cheeses with seasonings and toppings that combine well for good flavors. Like the Buffalo Chicken ball uses buffalo chicken sauce and chicken mixed with 3 flavors of cheese including blue cheese. Lots of great savory recipes that will be a regular for my family, and the sweet recipes make for interesting desserts that will invite conversation.

They are all very easy to make, and all the recipes so far have been a hit with my family. Tonight I plan to make the chocolate/peanut butter ball. I also really like the quick tips for dressing up goat cheese logs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! November 10, 2013

Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is such a fantastic book! The directions are easy to follow and the pictures in the book are beautiful! My four year old helped me make our first cheese ball, the Nacho Cat, and we're hooked! It was a fun activity for the two of us to do together and she loved decorating the cat. To top it all off, the cheese ball was delicious! I highly recommend this book! It's recipes are great to make for yourself and easy enough to make for a party without worrying if it will look like the picture in the book. Whichever you decide to make, I'm sure it will be a crowd pleaser!
