Book Description

10 and upGreat Battles in History
The Battle of Antietam, though not a decisive Northern victory, was enough of a victory that it prompted President Lincoln to deliver the Emancipation Proclamation, which, by freeing the slaves, greatly undermined the Southern war effort.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-10. Reger opens with an overview of the causes of the Civil War, followed by a brief account of the days leading up to the infamous battle. The main focus of the text is on the events of September 17, 1862, the "bloodiest day" of the war. Each arena and position is carefully examined: the action at Bloody Lane; at Burnside's bridge; and at Sharpsburg Ridge. The narrative is well written and easy to follow. Sidebar sketches show the key figures involved in the action. Readers learn about the wounding of Capt. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., later a Supreme Court justice; of the bravery of future President William McKinley, a commissary sergeant who served coffee to his men; and of the saddle invented by General George McClellan. These human-interest stories bring this episode alive, as do the many maps, archival photographs, and reproductions.?Elizabeth M. Reardon, McCallie School, Chattanooga, TN

5.0 out of 5 stars A vivid narrative of the heart and mind of the civil war., May 20, 1999

This review is from: Great Battles in History - The Battle of Antietam (Hardcover)
Reger's "Antietam" vividly chronicles the events leading up to, and including the battle and aftermath of the "bloodiest battle" of the civil war. various other aspects of the era are discussed by the author. Reger writes in a an easy-flowing, yet detailed and descriptive manner. As a secondary school U.S History teacher I've found this and other books from Jim Reger-and others like him-to be extremely helpful in attracting students to "historical" text. This refreshingly new type of historical narrative is welcome, enjoyable reading to the young and adult student of history.
