Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Long before the current mini-revival in Western music, Riders in the Sky harmonized about lonesome trails, tumblin' tumbleweeds, and big Montana skies. Two decades on, lead singer Ranger Doug still croons and yodels with the best of them, but what sets the trio apart is their wide stylistic range. With Ranger Doug on acoustic guitar, Woody Paul on fiddle, and Too Slim on bass, the trio are capable of much more than romantic cowboy melodies. On A Great Big Western Howdy the Riders expertly lasso dramatic narratives ("A Border Romance"), romping swing ("Wah-Hoo"), and three-part gospel harmonies. And Too Slim remains the wittiest comic sidekick on record, as he proves on the dizzily hilarious "Ballad of Palindrome." --Michael McCall

5.0 out of 5 stars Wah Hoo!, December 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: A Great Big Western Howdy From Riders In The Sky (Audio CD)
I've been a Riders fan for years and they keep getting better and better. Don't let the cowboy label scare you away...I am a big fan of all kinds of music from opera to klezmer and these guys are one of the most entertaining acts you can ever listen to (or see). "Ballad of Pallindrome" will give you a good idea of the comedy of Too Slim and Woody Paul that shines in their live shows, while "Wah Hoo!" shows their versatility as musicians as they swing with the best of them. And for pure harmonizing, "Cowboy Camp Meeting" shows you what Riders can do "unplugged". A true joy from start to finish. I introduced my 13year old nephew to Riders and he thinks they are "too cool". A great CD for car rides with the family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can you wear the pits off a CD?, December 2, 2000

This review is from: A Great Big Western Howdy From Riders In The Sky (Audio CD)
I purchased this CD based on a review, having never heard a song by the trio. The day it arrived I popped it into the stereo on the way to work. As the infectious harmonies, yodels and fiddle playing filled the car during "Wahoo," I got a grin *so* big the corners of my mouth damn near met at the back of my neck (which woulda caused the top of my head to slide right off, as everyone knows). I enjoy every song so much that I bought another copy for the office, and I'm going to see the Riders perform live on Dec. 15. I can't recommend them highly enough. Good, clean fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wahoo, July 29, 2000

After listening to this CD a few times, I started wearing a big Stetson hat. It has improved my ability to yodel. The music, that is.
