"It's kind of hard to pin down, because there's so much on it," Tony Trischka says of his new Rounder album Great Big World. "It's all over the place, which is kind of where I live."

In a consistently adventurous musical career that spans nearly half a century, Tony Trischka has established himself as both a wildly inventive recording artist and one of ... Read more in Amazon's Tony Trischka Store

Editorial Reviews

Tony Trischka is one of the leading lights of contemporary banjo. His innovations have inspired players like Bela Fleck and myriad others, helping to define the dynamic banjo stylings of today. With a formidable range from traditional pieces through contemporary experimentation, Great Big World encompasses the generous world of Tony Trischka's music his sterling banjo, and his extraordinary original tunes. Here likeminded creative musicians (Steve Martin, Aoife O Donovan, Noam Pikelny, Larry Campbell, Abigail Washburn, Ramblin Jack Elliot, and many others) are brought together to receive Tony's clear mandate: inhabit a song and make it your own. Who else but Tony Trischka would dare to include a Single String Medley, just what it sounds like, and also have the imagination and verve to pull it off! Bela Fleck recalls, Tony used to say he played off his feelings, and I never knew exactly what he meant back then, but maybe I didn't have to. I could listen and feel things myself which is the goal of great music, come to think about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This isn't banjo, this is BANJO! March 11, 2014
Format:Audio CD
Many people think of the banjo as idiosyncratic --a special sound good for certain kinds of music only, and maybe not an instrument for all seasons. But Tony Trischka for many years has found a way to make that instrument's sound so big and wide. His fingers can coax soft, gentle notes from a summer day or fire off sharp reports from atop a bucking bronco. He can make a song make you laugh. He is a monster player, but this is not a man to spend is energy showing off his technique and leaving your brain tired and heart cold. He goes to the heart every time. I played it once and loved it. I played it five times and started to get the melodies baked into my circuits. I played it ten times and found myself getting into a...what, a meditative place. I wholeheartedly recommend this CD. Also World Turning and Dust on the Needle and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get this CD -no filler March 8, 2014

Great CD, keeps me sane in Philly traffic, also great listening for headphone users-clean music without all the pro-tools added noise that's way too common today. Great vocals, excellent instrumental accompaniment that goes beyond straight bluegrass.
