Book Description

May 1, 2007
Calling on geometric forms found in Celtic monuments and manuscripts, this crafter’s companion presents basic design principles and step-by-step instructions for plotting out and drawing lines, twists, braids, and knots in the ancient Irish tradition. With lessons that can be applied to a multitude of arts and crafts—from needlework and woodworking to decorative painting—this instructional guide unravels the secrets to creating intricate Celtic knot work. Offering increasingly intricate designs with the addition of lines and new textures, artisans of any skill level will revel in the endless archive of original patterns provided in this sourcebook.

Lora and her husband, Michael, took their home based art studio, Art Designs Studio established in 1982, to the Internet by creating www.CarvingPatterns.com in 1997, a website focusing on online tutorials, projects, line art patterns and drawings created exclusively by Lora for craters and artisans. 5.0 out of 5 stars Quite Possibly The Ultimate! September 9, 2007
Format:Paperback
Lora S. Irish is a talented designed and author. She has the ability to make the complicated simple and accessible for we less talented masses. This book may actually be THE ultimate design source for celtic knots, as least for the novice/beginner.

Well-laid out, Irish offers background, history and origins of the Celtic Knot and a nice gallery of various media illustrating use of the Knot. She shows us simply how to understand the patterns and how they flow, including a great beginners lesson on plotting and graphing Knots, as well as layouts. I like her use of colored pencils to illustrate shadow and depth, and in so doing she gave us a little primer of their use, too.

You will not be disappointed in adding this book as a design source to your library, whether you are a gourd artist, woodburner, painter or just like to doodle.
