For those who remember the heydays of British steam, when named expresses thundered through stations and hurried along the countryside, this compilation of 5 videos will rekindle a nostalgia that has all but been forgotten.
Divided into almost hour long programs (each 55 min.) the set looks at the British express steam loco classes in what were the 4 regional groupings of GWR, SR, LMS and LNER, with BR Standard classes being the final chapter.
Each program starts with an introduction followed by archive film footage, in colour, from BR days, although having been captured at the latter end of steam working, some locos appear in woeful condition.
The entire series is meticulously narrated by Peter Woods, the well-known BBC newsreader. He adds detailed and interesting information about the design and running characteristics of the various class members, yet he leaves ample room to savour the sounds of working steam.
The main part of each video, about 35 minutes, depicts preserved examples running over BR metals. Many locos were test run by BR south of Sheffield and given tickets to haul regular excursions in North Wales and Scotland during the summer seasons of the late 80's and early 90's. The ex-Great Central preserved line also offers fine views of steam working around Loughborough. Other outings are captured in the Highlands, Yorkshire, the Midlands, Lancashire and Devon.
The modern sequences are professionally filmed and the high quality of sight and sound goes far beyond the old scratchy B&W 8mm efforts from the days when imaging technology was more limited.
All in all, an excellently crafted collection and well worth the money. Issued in NTSC VHS format for North American video viewing, you may purchase the complete 5-set edition, or each of the "regions" individually, but having seen one you'll certainly want them all.
