Fellow US Viewers:

If you've watched our cooking and baking competition shows and wondered, "Why is everyone so mean? Why are they so loud? Why is this scene of people icing cupcakes overlain by a death metal guitar riff?" this may be the series to show you that this format can have kind contestants, a measured pace, personable hosts, and informative asides while remaining compelling TV.

If you want to learn some new methods, tricks, and facts while rooting for talented and truly likeable people (who, probably importantly, are allowed to stay likeable in that they are very much competing against the challenge constraints and their own skill rather than being directly pit against one another), give The Great British Baking Show [UK name: The Great British Bake Off] a try.

An ending note: I watched and enjoyed each of these as they aired on PBS. When the series was done, I sought for a legal way to watch previous seasons (purely ethical reasons notwithstanding, some jobs frown upon piracy). Alas, they don't seem to be available in the US aside from some sketchy YouTube uploads.
I hope that Amazon works magic with the BBC to get rights. Even if they couldn't swing getting them on Prime, there are those of us who would gladly pay.

Wonderful, informative and witty describes this awesome program from across the pond. I absolutely fell in love with this show because not only are the hosts and judges funny and helpful in their critiques, the contestants bring all sorts of ideas and personalities into the mix. I have learned so much about classical cakes and baking techniques just by watching the episodes. I love learning about the history of dishes and this PBS show mixes in a little history with each new competition. Unfortunately we cannot purchase previous seasons and they are blocked due to copyright laws on Youtube. (There are a few broadcasts on Youtube that one can catch, but none as clear as the ones here on Prime.) Here's hoping that Amazon and the BBC strike up a deal that would allow us here in the states to watch/purchase older seasons. Thank you for giving us a taste with season 5!

One of the most delightful cooking competitions around. The Brits seem to understand that reality television should actually be real, so they seem to choose real people, and just let things happen. I'm a baker myself, and while I don't always agree with some of the techniques they suggest, I also learn quite a bit.

Now, if this show had been made in the US, the participants would be models or out-of-work actors who took a crash course in baking right before the show, the producers would spend more time figuring out how to goose the participants into cheesy interpersonal dramas than actually plan cooking competitions, and I'd learn very little. I'm sure that at some point Food Network or whoever will copy this show and do exactly that.

My only complaint is that there's only one season available on Amazon right now. I'm thrilled that it's on Amazon Prime and therefore free to Prime members...but I definitely would like to see more. It's addicting.

As a Brit that lives in the US, I've seen some of this show on visits home and been left wanting more! What other show can you imagine being so engaged while watching people who are nervously watching their cake/bread/biscuit cook through the oven door... please, please can we have the full set of seasons? The season before this was a cracker and I only saw 3 of the episodes

Wonderful! Hard to believe how good this is. Everyone is so nice! Especially because the people do not seem competitive, they just seem like regular people, but that makes it all the more watchable and wow the food looks good and the editing is great and so are the hosts/experts. None of these people are familiar to me since I am not a foodie but I really like hearing from all of them! I have not watched the whole season yet, but I can hardly wait to see it all and I hope there will be a season 2, and more lovely shows like this!

This is my favorite cooking show ever! All of the people are interesting, and everyone treats everyone else so nicely. No stern "pack your knives and go" here - all of the hosts and other contestants rally around the person who is leaving, sincerely expressing their sadness. And the cooking is top notch. I've learned quite a lot about baking by watching this show. Similar baking competitions on American TV are nowhere near as challenging - or as interesting.

Just finished binge watching this season and enjoyed every minute of it. As others have undoubtedly mentioned it is compelling not for made up drama or shouting judges but for it's real characters who make mistakes and grin and bear it, how there isn't any emphasis on prizes and mostly for me how the contestants meld together and seem to enjoy baking in the tent with each other. The hosts and judges also come across as rooting for the bakers and helping them along as best they can.

To finish off I will say that this is my first Amazon review and I buy lots of things from Amazon but to date this is the only item/show I felt the need to give a rating to and it must be 5 star bakers.
