4.0 out of 5 stars Late Recordings by a Cajun Master, May 7, 2004

This review is from: The Great Cajun Accordionist (Audio CD)
"The Great Cajun Accordionist" collects the two albums recorded by Abshire for La Louisiane records during the 1970s. There are some nice cuts here, with excellent sidemen such as Rufus Thibodeaux and Merlin Fontenot. The La Louisiane sides are "slicker" than Abshire's earlier recordings for Khoury's and Swallow, but it was difficult for the accordionist to be anything but funky. I prefer the interaction between Abshire and the Balfa Brothers on the Swallow sides, they seem to have more punch and dancehall elan, but this disc is an excellent companion piece to those albums (available on Swallow and on a harder to find Ace CD). There is no duplication from other available Abshire discs and this Ace reissue is essential for Cajun fans.
