Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The canon of great books has been the subject of much controversy in higher education for the past couple of decades. Several years ago, Stanford received national media attention when it revised its reading list. Many universities have been and are currently undergoing curriculum revision. Casement, a contributor to Midwest Quarterly, offers a thoughtful appraisal of the conflict and maps a sensible path through a field strewn with mines by both the defenders and the detractors of the canon. Casement offers a clear perspective on both the origin of this debate and the likely shape of things to come. Educators should pay careful attention to adding required texts for the right reasons, he concludes, while considering different viewpoints than those found in the existing titles. This book will be of interest to students, professors, and academic administrators. Recommended for academic libraries.
