A Thrilling, In-Depth Look At This Legendary Automaker

Carl Benz, tinkering in his Mannheim, Germany, workshop, gave the world its first automobile powered by an internal combustion engine. Over 100 years later, the company bearing his name is still one of the world's most innovative automakers. From that first single-cylinder motor-wagon, to elegant town cars for wealthy industrialists in the 1920s and futuristic Grand Prix racers in the 1930s, Mercedes carved out a niche as the builder of the best cars possible. Its sport custom-bodied road cars from the 1930s command over $5 million dollars at auctions today. Find out how a company maintains its status as one of the truly great cars for over 100 years.

From sports cars to luxury cars, from foreign elegance to domestic muscle, Great Cars offers an in-depth look at the world's fastest, most expensive, most exciting and most unusual automobiles, along with the people who loved and created them.

Bonus Features:
Tribute To Fangio (vintage featurette)
Bonus Great Cars Episode: Silver Arrows
Million Dollar Mercedes (featurette)
Jay Leno Introduces The Maybach

This video began fairly well, explaining the origins of Daimler-Benz as an automotive company in a well presented fashion. The story of the company's founders and namesakes were well presented.

Then, the video began to chronicle the development of M-B racing and high performance cars exclusively. There was little about passenger cars after the early years and I felt the video should have spent far more time on M-B's main area of auto design and manufacture. As significant as the "arrows" and "gull wings" were, other M-B autos were just as important to automotive history.

I was disappointed by this DVD for the above reason. If one is interested in M-B sports cars exclusively, the History Channel "Automobiles" series episode (available in DVD format here on Amazon) on Mercedes-Benz was certainly better in my opinion and I would recommend that DVD instead of this one.
