To have a sense of all that is in nature and the sense of balance, for a full and intelligent appreciation of the natural world, in a single readable volume - this is the book. A great book. I have read this twice in 20 years and expect to read it again, for perspective, and to still learn.

I came across this book in a small library in the mid 1960's, as a young teenager, and consider it one of the significant books I have read in my lifetime(presently 58). I think what affected me so profoundly was the realization that there was another individual who viewed the world in a similar manner to me. I have read this book several times throughout the years and own a copy. Mr. Krutch likely had no idea of the positive effect he would have on individual lives when he wrote this.
