Editorial Reviews

Product Description

A Chicago band known for its muddy work boots, anarchic stage shows and fondness for committing musical "pure butchery" (the New York Times) may seem an odd match for the stylish craft and classicism of a Nashville songwriting treasure, but that's just what came to be on Great Chicago Fire. The Waco Brothers, in case you haven't been paying attention are the tireless Jon Langford (Mekons, Pine Valley Cosmonauts, Skull Orchard), Steve Goulding (Mekons, PVC, Graham Parker & the Rumour), Alan Doughty (Jesus Jones), Deano (Dollar Store, Wreck), Tracy Dear and Joe Camarillo (Hushdrops). Paul Burch and his fabulous WPA Ballclub has collaborated with artists in every musical genre including Mark Knopfler, Ralph Stanley, Lambchop, Exene Cervenka, and Vic Chesnutt.

Review

The Wacos and Burch pull off a nifty trick on Great Chicago Fire. If the
Rolling Stones were still making great records, this would be it. --Chicago Tribune

It's just as insurgent as Bloodshot typically promises but Burch brings a
less boozy vibe to the sessions that nonetheless remain loose, vibrant and
crackling. Country rock done right, ie: without anyone taking themselves too
seriously. --American Songwriter

While plenty of country and folk roots are touched on here, the vigor and
rowdy spirit is always looming, but never gets too intense, which works
well, and allows both driving forces of the project to be heard. This is
just evidence of a metric ton of talent. --Slug Magazine

Such a paring seems like a great risk/great reward gamble for both musicians and fortunately for both the listener and the players it is the latter...Great Chicago Fire is the sound of a group of men who grateful to be working together, happy to be playing their favorite style of music and unable to contain their excitement. Fortunately for us, they didn t try. --PopMatters.com

This collaboration gives Burch s melodies the muscle they need, while bringing a dash of class to the Wacos party. Bring on a second round. --Winnipeg Star

I'm a big fan of Paul Burch, and have been looking forward to this release! Burch and the Waco Brothers play well off each other, it's an album that makes you want to jump up and down, all around. My favorite tracks are Up on the Mountain, Monterrey, and A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall.

Burch=subtlety. Waco Brothers wanna be your sledgehammer. Some of it works, some of it doesn't...the looooong cover of a Dylan warhorse is totally unnecessary. Not a dream team - both are better apart, esp. Burch.

"What do you get when you put the rabble rousing Chicagoans known to be fond of the drink in a studio with a Nashvilian known for his elegant country classicism? You get the 'Great Chicago Fire.' High energy, smooth with an edge."

What else could you want?

A recent studio recording that is in step with what one can expect from the Wacos. Check out what the Wacos are sounding like recently in the studio.
