5.0 out of 5 stars One Beautiful Book, September 5, 2011

This review is from: The Great Chiefs (Hardcover)
The Great Chiefs is a true gem. This tells the tale of so many great Chiefs and warriors. One man that it does talk about is Geronimo who was not a Chief but a Medicine Man as well as a Revolutionary. Chief Joseph is also in there as well as Red Cloud and Sitting Bull. The tragedy of the Sioux is told in this Book and that is why I got it for that tragedy is one of the saddest moments in not only the history of the United States but the whole of mankind. Thunderheart is a tale about the tragedy of the people on the Ogalala Reservation in the 1970s, and the sadness of the tragedy of the Sioux is shown in continuation in that epic Motion Picture.

Again for all who love history and the Old West please get as many copies of the Time Life Books collection on the Old West. This is a keepsake and a great tool of information for any child who ants to lean about the Old West and the American Story.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Great Chiefs/The Old West, October 28, 2011
The Great Chiefs is one of twenty-seven volumes in the popular Time-Life book series The Old West. This book portrays the lives of Native American leaders and their varied responses to the white settlement of the American West. The book mainly focuses on Chief Little Mountain of the Kiowas, Cochise, Geronimo, Quanah Parker, Washakie, Chief Joseph, and Sitting Bull. Numerous other chiefs are portrayed as well. Other topics covered include the Battle of the Rosebud, the Battle of Little Bighorn, the Modoc War, the emergence of the ghost dance religion, and the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890. Author Benjamin Capps skillfully describes how the more numerous, powerful, and cohesive whites overcame the grit and courage of Geronimo, Chief Joseph, and Sitting Bull. The development of the high powered Sharps rifle enabled white buffalo hunters to slaughter the Indians' food source; the buffalo herds, once numbering 30 million animals, would be reduced to fewer than 1,000 beasts by 1886. The fast-moving narrative and numerous contemporary photographs and paintings make The Great Chiefs an excellent depiction of American Indian leaders and their role in shaping the history of the Old West.
