Pleasant, but the content is too light, August 6, 2005
This review is from: Great Christian Hymn Writers (Paperback)
Great Christian Hymn Writers is a pleasant book providing short (one to four pages) summaries of 47 hymn writers with another group of "one hit wonders". The stories are quite short and generally aren't given the space to develop much of sense of the character or the times that these people lived through. For example, we are told that Sarah Adam's (Nearer, My God to Thee) mother died when Sarah was 5. Unfortunately, that traumatic event is not explored in the remainder of the story. Presented in this manner this potentially life-changing event is reduced to almost a trivia question. How did this event change Sarah and her music? This question is never answered.
After a while, the stories meld together with little to differentiate one from another. There is no music notation in the book and nothing to tell of the struggle to marry text to music. If you are looking for a book on hymn writers that is best read in short snippets, this may be what you are looking for. Otherwise, it is just too shallow of a sip into 400 years of Christian hymns.
