A stolen antique! A bright red baggage car from Spence's antique circus train is missing! Zoe's mission, if she chooses to accept it, is to find the thief. Her reward: the honor of becoming Lieutenant of the Northern Spy Club. Zoe's suspects include: a reclusive neighbor, Juniper Boomer, a couple of Clowns, Tulip and Hackberry, who are in town with a visiting Circus, and a monkey who really likes the color red. Zoe begins her investigation and finds that this puzzle is one of the scariest adventures the Northern Spys have ever tackled.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The more settled farming community of rural Vermont is the scene of Nancy Means Wright's THE GREAT CIRCUS TRAIN ROBBERY. Zoe is still trying to get into her older brother's Northern Spy Club, but her assignment of observing the man next door is more boring than mysterious. Then her best friend, Spencer, reports that one of the cars of his prized antique circus train has been stolen, and Zoe is on the case at once. More complications ensue as Zoe and Spencer get involved in the backstage antics of the clowns in the traveling circus playing in their town. A mischievous monkey who is attracted to red items leads the pair to more clues, and the children win their way into the club by solving an old mystery, uniting two battling brothers, and improving the clowns' act. A Jolly addition to the mystery shelf. --Mystery Scene Magazine 11-'08.(Roberta Rogow, reviewer)

Review

Wright's newest novel for children is a delightful romp through a world of stolen model trains, terrified circus clowns, quirky neighbors, annoying older brothers and staunch friends. I couldn't put it down. And the scenes of sneaking into the nasty neighbor's house are positively harrowing!

More About the Author

I'm the author of seventeen books of non fiction, fiction, and poetry; five contemporary mystery novels from St. Martin's Press, a novella, "Fire and Ice," in the Worldwide Library anthology, CRIMES OF PASSION, two children's mysteries, one of which won the Agatha Award for Best '06 Children's / YA Novel. A sequel, THE GREAT CIRCUS TRAIN ROBBERY followed in '08 and was an Agatha finalist. Now I've begun a mystery series based on the turbulent life of 18th-century feminist Mary Wollstonecraft: MIDNIGHT FIRES came out in 2010 from Perseverance Press in spring of 2010, followed by The Nighmare in 2011. Of course there are dozens of poems (including two chapbooks)and short stories in the literary mags--both mainstream (American Literary Review,et al.) and mystery (Level Best Books and Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine). "The Outpost" and "Religious Wars" are now on Amazon Shorts. Vermont is my primary writing landscape! I love its mountains, valleys, autumn leaves, winter snows--even mud season, which inspired my first mystery. I live with my life partner, aerospace engineer Llyn Rice, and two huge demanding Maine Coon cats. Seven grandkids, all in Vermont, complete the scene. Over Labor Day weekend I experienced The Great Circus Train Robbery. Zoe really wants to move up in the ranks of her brother's elite Northern Spy Club. Her mission is to find Spence's favorite model train car: an antique red baggage car. Unfortunately for Zoe, suspects abound. From the reclusive next-door neighbor to the funky dwarf clown to the energetic monkey with a penchant for the color red. Can Zoe find the car before estranged brothers Juniper and Hackberry come to blows? From the outset, Nancy Means Wright's The Great Circus Train robbery is a fast paced, fun romp. Your kids shouldn't miss this story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Page-Turning Sequel to Pea Soup Poisonings!, July 6, 2008
This review is from: The Great Circus Train Robbery (Paperback)
Who stole Spence's antique circus train cars? Was it Juniper Boomer like Zoe suspects? And, where does Hackberry the circus clown fit into all of this? There are more questions than answers as Zoe is determined to solve a mystery in order to become a lieutenant in her brother Kelby's Northern Spy Club. Zoe is a daring and adventurous girl, while her friend Spence is determined to solve the mystery of his missing train cars. Together they do an amazing job of deduction and of following clues until the mystery is solved.

Nancy Means Wright continues her award winning adventures of Zoe Elwood, girl detective, in this fun and page-turning sequel to The Pea Soup Poisonings. It is well plotted and the characters are likeable and fascinating like Sweet Gum the monkey with pierced ears. The setting in Vermont, as well as the behind the scenes in the circus are fun to get to know. Readers age 8 to 12, will delight in this book and all of Zoe's adventures. All readers will eagerly want yet another in this series. What a welcome addition to a home or classroom library!
