Book Description

Audio Editions Mystery Masters June 2000
The Victorian-era writers featured in this collection are renowned for their power of invention and command of horror. Here are six of their stories - including "The Fall of the House of Usher," justifiably considered the best of the genre ever written - read by an actor schooled in creating the atmosphere of suspense.

Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

This mixed bag of classic horror features some remarkable writing and some so dated that they're more musty than "classic." Reader Geraint Wyn Davies shines in "The Body Snatchers" by Robert Louis Stevenson--capturing perfectly the regional accents and the gripping horror of two doctors deep in a plot that threatens their sanity. His rendition of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" is melodramatic and overwrought, and a poor choice for this collection. His delicate handling of Washington Irving's "Adventure of the German Student," a brief but memorable piece, is ideal for the genre. Ambrose Bierce's "A Watcher by the Dead" is a masterful classic that will raise an appropriate number of goose bumps. 4.0 out of 5 stars Classically Trained Makes a Difference, August 3, 2000

Davies' classical experience shows in his television work ("Forever Knight") and is put to even greater use in this audiobook. His command of voice and atmosphere paints gothic pictures of Roderick Usher's doomed House or the living and dead occupants of Barwyke Hall (a little known work by J. Sheridan Le Fenu entitled "Dickon the Devil"). This audiobook must be listened to in the dark. It may be useful in literature or performance classes as well, for the authors of the literature (Ambrose Bierce, Robert Louis Stevenson, Washington Irving and others)are without doubt some of the best and never lose their seductive darkness; and Davies' rich, passioned vocal work serves as an excellent guide for students to study. For more "mundane" purposes, the stories are brisk, chilly, and altogether creepy. Those of you who already own audio copies of "Usher" and similar works ought to check this out just for comparisons' sake; Davies does an excellent job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great voice, great stories, August 9, 2002
This review is from: Great Classic Hauntings: Six Unabridged Stories (Audio Editions Mystery Masters) (Audio Cassette)
This audiobook contains classic horror/suspense stories from some of the best, most notably, Edgar Allan Poe. Geraint Wyn Davies does not just read the stories, he becomes the characters. His oration brings each story to life and his marvelous Welsh-Canadian accent is used to fullest potential to give life to these creepy tales. I listened to these tapes before bed, while getting ready for work and while driving long distances and they were entertaining and spooky every time. These were my first audiobooks and, with orators like Mr. Wyn Davies, they most certainly will not be the last!
