5.0 out of 5 stars The Book That Started It All!, December 10, 2007

This review is from: The Great Comic Book Heroes: The Origins and Early Adventures of the Classic Super-Heroes of the Comic Books (Hardcover)
I first chanced upon this book in a grammar school library in early 1966.
Comics at that time where being given a big shot-in-the-arm because of the popularity of The Batman TV Show. I was an avid reader of the comics: "Donald Duck", "Uncle Scrooge" and "Dennis The Menace", but after this book reeled me in, I learned of super heroes and adventure comics, my little world had gotten a whole lot bigger.

I read and re-read this amazing Book: "The Great Comic Book Heroes" over and over again. Not just for the great stories it contained but, for the essays by Jules Feiffer and his personal accounts of growing up and being engulfed with these fantastic stories and graphics of the 1940's.

I wanted to steal this book from the library, but my parents weren't going to let me get away with that! So, I bugged my Mother to buy this book for me as a Christmas gift. That wasn't going to happen as the 1965 dial edition, was long out of print. And used booksellers wanted over $20.00 a copy of this gem, and in 1966 that kind of pricing was considered: "Highway Robbery!". Well another publisher brought it back in the early 1970's and I did at last have my copy at home.

Out of the thousands of books I have purchased and stockpilled over the last 40 years this was the one that started that book collection going. My love of books stems from that day in a school library when I discovered this wonderful new world of: "The Great Comic Book Heroes".

You can be 80 or 8 years of age, this book would appeal to both age groups easily. This book is about Comics and growing up with them, but at the same time, it's also about America. This is a timeless story, that jumps right off it's pages. Jules, is one of our country's greatest writers and cartoonists, and the proof is right here.
This is a history lesson of amazing tales that really does belong in any home library.
FIVE STARS!!!
