The novel is a sympathetic and sensitive depiction of early twentieth century Norwegian rural life through the eyes of a young boy.

Per is as rooted to the ground as much as the trees and crops. Routine chores and immeasurable demands preclude lackadaisical outings. New social contacts are measured by an odd tramp spending the night in the hayloft. The farm animals are his closest friends?
