It's So Unusual!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Great Cyndi Lauper (Audio CD)
This is a terrific compilation that I bought for some near-impossible to find rare songs:1) "what a thrill" a kinetic song from her former band, blue angel. Beyond these rareties, the Aussies have chosen many off-beat songs to represent Cyndi's ouvre, and, I for one, really appreciate this! For instance, "911" features a cameo by Pee Wee Herman! "Yeah Yeah," seemingly a throw-away track from her first CD, is actually hillarious, with Cyndi doing her best Helen Kane impression. And, "broken glass" is a devastating little ditty about domestic violence that sits beside the safer "single" from "Hat Full Of Stars," "That's What I think." Three cheers for OZ! Their down-under sensiblity has turned this compilation on its head and we are better for it!

Cyndi The Great,
By Roberta Hotard "Mrs. H" (Somewhere here, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Great Cyndi Lauper (Audio CD)
The name Cyndi Lauper brings music lyrics to my mind . I listened in the 80's and she never left me . My recent purchase has made me very happy since i have been trying to get this 3 cd set for quite a while. Anyways I will treasure this forever. Vol 1. Has many of her classics with 15 songs altogether. Vol 2 Features Change of Heart, I Drove All night and You Dont Know , along with 12 other songs. Vol. 3 has 14 songs and a few are: Witness, I'll Kiss You and I Dont Want To Be Your Friend. If you are a Cyndi Lauper fan from day 1 this is a good choice of variety to have in 1 set. 44 songs of Cyndi truly amazing.

The complaints below simply aren't warrented. Cheap packaging? They come in 3 standard plastic cases, songs are listed on the back, picture insert on the front. The 3 cases are inserted in a sturdy paper cd set container. What's cheap about that? So what if there's no booklet. I wouldn't read it anyway. And poor sound quality?? There's nothing at all wrong with the sound. All original songs, lots of them and at a bargain price! Worth every penny!

Rediscovering Cyndi Lauper,
By A Customer
This review is from: Great Cyndi Lauper (Audio CD)
I purchased this 3 cd set after seeing Cyndi's Live...At Last DVD. I already owned At Last the album and wanted a compilation album of Cyndi's old hits. This cd was only $13.99 @ best buy, the same price as Twelve Deadly Cyns, and I quickly snatched this one up instead. This is an amazing compilation that opened me up to material I never knew. Cyndi Lauper has one of the most underated voices in the world. I now have a ton of new favourite songs by this misunderstood genius. I have found out that this collection also has some hard to find tracks on it, like "Hole In My Heart" from her movie Vibes, and "The Goonies R Good Enough" from The Goonies soundtrack. There is no booklet, so there is little information on the origins of the songs except credits, but who cares. I didn't buy this cd to read, I bought it to listen to. Now I am hooked, and I just bought her japanese only release Shine (the full album, not the ep). If you are just getting into Cyndi Lauper, this is the place to start. Much better variety than the more commercial Twelve Deadly Cyns.

Good if you new to Cyndi, but lacking for true fans.,

I love Cyndi Lauper! I had high hopes for this collection, but it let me down in a few ways. First things first. Audio quality is no different from the separate releases of these songs. They are slightly louder, but an analysis of their wave forms (which I did) show they are identical in every other way. So no remastering. There's no booklet either. No artwork, lyrics, or historical essays.
The Good: If you do not own any CDs by Cyndi, this collection will save you some money. It has ALL the songs from SHE'S SO UNUSUAL, all but 2 songs from TRUE COLORS, all the GOOD songs from A NIGHT TO REMEMBER, both her songs from GOONIES (The Goonies R Good Enough & B-Side What A Thrill), her single to promote VIBES (Hole In My Heart), and her hit single from TYCOON (The World Is Stone). So that will save you from having to hunt down and buy 4 separate CDs. Cool! Also you get 2 additional B-sides: Unabbreviated Love from A NIGHT TO REMEMBER, and Cold from HAT FULL OF STARS. But I don't think these songs are very good so that's not a real selling point for me. The Bad: I docked it one star for what it does NOT contain. Her B-side from SHE's SO UNUSUAL (Right Track, Wrong Train) is missing! This has NEVER been ported to CD and it would have been great to have finally seen it on a CD! It's not the best song though so I'm only kind of disappointed. The 2 songs they left off from TRUE COLORS are great songs! No Boy Blue or Faraway Nearby! There was no reason not to include these songs. So you will still have to buy the TRUE COLORS CD to get these. If they would have traded Calm Before The Storm and One Track Mind (the only 2 songs I skip from that CD) with the songs they left off that I just listed then I could have turned a blind eye. Also the B-Side Heading For The Moon is not here. That song is awesome! And finally her B-side From TYCOON (You Have To Learn To Live Alone) is not here either. So you'll have to go find that on your own as well. All in all, you will still have to hunt down 4 other sources besides this compilation to get all her good work from this time period, just to collect 5 miscellaneous songs that SHOULD have been here to begin with. The Ugly: I docked it one additional star for the FALSE ADVERTISING this product contains. It says that it does indeed contain the B-side song Heading For The Moon. IT DOES NOT! For shame.

Sound quality is a minor drawback,

This box set is a good representation of Cindy Lauper's career; however, the price you REALLY pay for getting so much at such a relatively low cost is a frustrating sound quality. You'll hear the original productions of the songs, yes, but it seems as if the bass factor on this compilation was turned down during transfer and, consequently, every song has a slightly-flat quality to it. You will need to turn the bass control on your personal music system all the way up if you want to hear a satisfying sound.

A Cyndi grab-bag...but what happened to "Boy Blue"?,
By
This review is from: Great Cyndi Lauper (Audio CD)
Three discs of Cyndi Lauper, she of the flashy, thrift-shop style and powerful-pop vocals. It's crammed full of album tracks, hit singles, and several rare cuts (the B-side "Cold", the hard to find "The World Is Stone", and of course "Hole In My Heart", one of Lauper's best songs which never appeared on any of her albums). Still, the packaging is bare-bones, and the sequencing of the songs is all over the map (which keeps the listener on his toes as to what selection might be coming next, but is rather terrible in terms of Lauper's musical history). And couldn't they find a better photo of La Lauper herself? The one image they've got is something you might find on the internet after everything else about Cyndi has been considered.

For roughly the price of a new CD, I ordered this 3 disc compilation. Very happy to have some of her earlier material again, especially the selections from 'Hatful of Stars'. Cyndi has one of the best voices in popular music these last few decades and she continues to push the edge of her comfort zone in terms of exploring different musical genres. Listen to 'Memphis Blues'. Saw her live about a month ago, and the lady's pipes are just amazing. When she holds a note and her throat opens up she probably doesn't even need a microphone or amplifier. A national treasure, see her live if you have the opportunity. You won't be sorry.

They had a little error though. There's a song missing. Songlist shows 44 songs when there really are 43. It's worth the pay, though!!! I don't regret buying it at all. I'm a true Cyndi fan since she first came out. Thank you
