Book Description

Howell's Best of Breed Library February 19, 1999
This all-new book about the popular canine giant is the first in-depth work on the breed for Howell Book House since 1981. It is intended as a complete reference on the breed for every Dane owner from the reader with a first puppy to the serious breeder with a kennel full of champions. Completely authoritative, it also sparkles with the author's good humor and her obvious love of the bree—a must for the Dane fancier's library.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

The Great Dane For many years the most familiar of the giant breeds, the Great Dane enjoys the admiration of dog lovers everywhere — and for all the right reasons. Interestingly, the Great Dane is not Danish at all, but was developed in Germany to hunt wild boar. For this the Dane needed strength, speed, good sense and a deep reservoir of courage. Modern Great Danes fully reflect these virtues. The Great Dane is also as handsome as he is dependable. His sleek coat may be one of several beautiful colors and is easily looked after. This elegant relative of the early Mastiffs has a "people-pleasing" nature that makes a Great Dane an easy dog to live with in spite of its size. As you will see in this book, a Dane can be trained as a peerless companion and an able participant in many performance activities for all dogs. For those who own and love the Great Dane, there can be no other breed.

From the Back Cover

The chapter topics include an honest look at what life is like with a giant canine, and an absorbing evaluation of the breed standard with an in-depth explanation of all its requirements. There is valuable guidance on acquiring a Great Dane and keeping your Dane happy and thriving as well as priceless advice on showing, performance activities, breeding and much more. The book also features two appendices, a bibliography and an extensive index, as well as a beautiful full-color section illustrating all approved Great Dane colors.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you can only get ONE book on the Great Dane, this is it!, April 7, 1999

This review is from: Great Dane: Model of Nobility (Howell's Best of Breed Library) (Hardcover)
I spent 8 months writing my own handbook to include in my puppy packets, and then comes Jill Swedlow's beautiful book answering even MORE questions than I did! This easy reader touches every aspect of the dane including one of the most important topics: How to find a REPUTABLE breeder with quality dogs, complete with interview tips for the novice. Both author and contributor clearly have an in-depth knowledge and lifelong commitment to the breed. Excellent work Jill!...and also to Lyn Richards for her section on obedience...an underlooked sport in Danes.

BUY THIS BOOK! I had purchased and read over a dozen books in preparation for bringing my puppy home, and this by far is the best.

The section on choosing a breeder is wonderful, and has some very important information you need to know before you buy a Dane from someone.

Bottom line, get it, read it, keep it for reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the New Dane Owner, December 25, 1999
This review is from: Great Dane: Model of Nobility (Howell's Best of Breed Library) (Hardcover)
This book answered all my questions about temperment, exercise and medical issues. I also really appreciated the balanced view - all the up and down side of owning a Great Dane from puppy to old age and death. Thanks to Jill for providing excellant information - I'm sure our new Dane will apprecitate it when he/she arrives!
