3.0 out of 5 stars Realistic
I bought this book because I was considering getting a Great Dane. I wanted to study up on the breed before committing to having one. It was good because it did bring up both good and bad things about the breed. Danes are not for everyone. However, I wish it would have had more info on everyday living with a Dane and not so much on breeding. And yes, I did get a Dane.

I spent 8 months writing my own handbook to include in my puppy packets, and then comes Jill Swedlow's beautiful book answering even MORE questions than I did! This easy reader touches every aspect of the dane including one of the most important topics: How to find a REPUTABLE breeder with quality dogs, complete with interview tips for the novice. Both author and contributor clearly have an in-depth knowledge and lifelong commitment to the breed. Excellent work Jill!...and also to Lyn Richards for her section on obedience...an underlooked sport in Danes.

BUY THIS BOOK! I had purchased and read over a dozen books in preparation for bringing my puppy home, and this by far is the best.

The section on choosing a breeder is wonderful, and has some very important information you need to know before you buy a Dane from someone.

Bottom line, get it, read it, keep it for reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the New Dane Owner, December 25, 1999
This review is from: Great Dane: Model of Nobility (Howell's Best of Breed Library) (Hardcover)
This book answered all my questions about temperment, exercise and medical issues. I also really appreciated the balanced view - all the up and down side of owning a Great Dane from puppy to old age and death. Thanks to Jill for providing excellant information - I'm sure our new Dane will apprecitate it when he/she arrives!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, Complete..a must read for all Dane fanatics, March 9, 1999
This review is from: Great Dane: Model of Nobility (Howell's Best of Breed Library) (Hardcover)
As a lifelong Great Dane owner, I have read them all. This is by far the most complete book I have seen yet...and a joy to read. It will be included in all my puppy packets for future litters as the most complete "instruction manual" I could hope to find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Starter Information and Fun to Read, February 16, 2000

This review is from: Great Dane: Model of Nobility (Howell's Best of Breed Library) (Hardcover)
I loved this book. I learned enough in the care section to save at least one trip to the vet (normal stuff that doesn't seem so - callouses for big dogs). This book was fun to read, in addition to being so informative. Great for better understanding my Great Dane.

This review is from: Great Dane: Model of Nobility (Howell's Best of Breed Library) (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book, I truly enjoyed reading it. The author covers a broad range of topics and covers each point thoroughly. I found this book very infomative and believe that there is no question about Danes that is not answered in this book. From breeding to color strains, temperment to behavior , training and more; it's all in there! This is the most rewarding , entertaining and informative book I have read on Danes. John

5.0 out of 5 stars This book epitomizes the GREAT, Great Dane!, February 21, 1999
This review is from: Great Dane: Model of Nobility (Howell's Best of Breed Library) (Hardcover)
Written by a Great Dane Breeder and Judge, this book is FINALLY a comprehensive, well written, and all encompassing book for the first time owner, long time Dane lover, breeder or simply a lover of all dogs.

Full of info on feeding, training, handling and breed resources, this book is unparalleled. (I wrote the Obedience and Training chapter in this lovely book! Lyn Richards: danelady@doglogic.com)

3.0 out of 5 stars very informative, October 10, 2010

This review is from: Great Dane: Model of Nobility (Howell's Best of Breed Library) (Hardcover)
Excellent information on a wonderful dog breed! Only drawbacks are this book would fare better with more color photos instead of black and white. Also, as a Great Dane owner, this breed is special and I got the impression throughout the book that the owner was more concerned about the dogs in the show ring instead of as a family pet. A must have if you are considering showing your dane, but if you are going add a Great Dane as a family pet, I'd also look elsewhere!

This review is from: Great Dane: Model of Nobility (Howell's Best of Breed Library) (Hardcover)
My husband loves Great Danes, having grown up with them, and had finally convinced me that we should get one. Having never lived with a dog over 20 pounds I thought I might need to do some research. I hit Amazon, of course, and looked at all their books on Great Danes, and most of them seemed to be general dog raising information, not info about Danes in particular. One review on one of these books mentioned Jill Sweedlow's book The Great Dane: Model of Nobility. I looked it up and read the excerpt and find it to be genuinely knowledgeable about the joys and tribulations of living with and loving Great Danes.

I purchased the book and i was not disappointed when it arrived. Sweedlow is a breeder and shower of Great Danes, so when she's talking about them you know she is talking from experience. I liked that she didn't just tell you something and expect you to accept it at face value, she would provide arguments and information that backed her up. I feel like I am much more aware of Great Danes, and the problems they can have being a giant breed.

This is a great book for anyone thinking about getting a Great Dane. Sweedlow is easy to understand and she provides all the material you need to know, from picking the right puppy for you, to feeding, training, showing, and breeding. She outlines the common diseases that affect Great Danes and what the symptoms are so you can watch out for them. She does write more with an eye towards showing Great Danes, but for people just looking for a pet there is plenty of information as well.
