About the Author

More than 120 million readers have found comfort in the writings of Max Lucado. He ministers at the Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, where he lives with his wife, Denalyn, and a sweet but misbehaving mutt, Andy.

More About the Author

In just under two decades of writing, Max Lucado has accomplished more than most writers hope for in a lifetime. Most of his books have appeared on one or more best seller lists, including those published by the "New York Times," "USA Today," "Publishers Weekly," and the Christian Booksellers Association (CBA). Aside from hardcover books, Lucado's writings have also been published as children's books, videos, CD-ROMs, DVDs, music CDs, mass paperback booklets, apparel, giftware, bookmarks, calendars, study Bibles, workbooks, curricula, and plush products. In spring 2003, Hallmark/Dayspring Cards launched a new gift card line featuring excerpts from Lucado's writings--and has already sold more than one million cards.

All this success has drawn more than a little attention to a previously low-profile Texas author and minister. Lucado has been featured in a wide range of media, including "USA Today," "Larry King Live," and "NBC Nightly News." He has spoken at the National Prayer Breakfast before the President of the United States. He has traveled with internationally renowned musicians as a special speaker on their music tours, such as the highly successful "Come Together & Worship Tour" (sponsored by Chevrolet) with Grammy Award-winning artists Michael W. Smith and Third Day.

Journey to the Top
Lucado was born in 1955 in San Angelo, Texas, and raised in Andrews, Texas, the youngest of four children. His father was an Exxon oil field mechanic who, Lucado remembers, always smelled of grease cleaner. "It makes it easy for me to see a God who is loving and kind--because my dad was," he says. His mother was a nurse who grew up working in the cotton fields.

Lucado went through a period of rebellion against his parents' values and their God during his teens and into college. But it wasn't long before he found himself drawn back to his roots, back to God. He married, spent time serving as a missionary in Brazil, and returned to the States, where he began working as a church minister and writing on the side.

Secret to Success
From all accounts, Max Lucado is not a man consumed by sales, awards, and achievements. He often turns down media interviews since they impede on family and ministry commitments. He spends the bulk of his week serving as senior minister at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas. And he is truly surprised by his own success--more impressed by his one-in-a-million wife and three amazing daughters than by his successful writing career.

Max Lucado in Great Day Every Day: Navigating Life's Challenges with Promise and Purpose inspires his reader to make the most out of day the Lord has made. The book is broken into three key sections, "Saturate Your Day in His Grace", "Entrust Your Day to His Oversight", and "Accept His Direction". In general the book focuses on reorientating one's view of a day, not seeing it as either ordinary or a challenge to overcome. Instead Lucado challenges the reader to see God's hand in the day, and be able to make the most of every single day in completing the purposes that God has built them for. He shows his readers how to overcome crisis, depression and fear in order to achieve these purposes by entrusting one's self to the Lord. By entrusting everyday to God, Lucado shows that one can overcome the challenges of the day to have purpose and direction. The core chapters are all followed by a one page "Daily Compass" that helps the reader reflect on the content of the chapter. There is also an extensive discussion guide for small groups. Additionally, the text is followed by a 30 day devotional, which though not written by Lucado, follows the three themes of the book.

Great Day Every Day is a reprint of Lucado's earlier Every Day Deserves a Chance. The main differences between the two versions is the "Daily Compass" was previously labeled "Daylifter", the 30 day devotional is not present in the earlier version, and the packaging and art of Great Day Every Day has a more serious tone. Lucado, as always, is a very good writer with chapters that are easy to read and comprehend. I think this would be a decent resource for a daily devotional due to the shortness of the chapters, usually 5 to 9 pages, and the "Daylifter" wrap up.

Book Review: Great Day

So what's wrong with you? Dog die?
Yup, My dog died ...
I was already in an incredible personal slump.
My best friend had just left on furlough.
Things were not going well at home.
Another friend had broken off our friendship.
My part-time job was losing its joy
Money was getting tight.
My boys were growing up way too fast...

And then this little book showed up in the mail one day from Booksneeze!

It was like a breathe of fresh air at just the right crucial moment. I had opened the package with the book the morning before the wild night when my twelve year old dog went into total arrest because of canine distemper. As we made the decision to go into the big city to take our old dog to see the vet after a wild night of convulsions and seizures, little phrases from the first pages I had browsed ran through my head. When the doctor said there was little hope and we considered putting our dear dog to sleep, I just kept repeating to myself that somewhere in all this mess there could still be a great day ahead, and it was all up to me.

Everyday really can be a good day inspite of all the bad around us. We ourselves as sons and daughters of the greatest King - God Himself can trust and allow our Lord to work it all out. That horrible day I was reminded over and over of Psalm 118:24: This is the day the LORD has made; We CAN rejoice and be glad in it.

I was super impressed with this book and found it a quick and easy read. It has simple, clear advice to help each Christian keep perspective and consider carefully how to redeem each day for God's service.

I highly recommend this book!

It came to my door on just the right time to help keep a bad day in perspective.

What to say for a book that is so good. No really. This book could gather all the adjectives you could think of and then some.

Max Lucado's "Great Day, Every Day" is jam packed with practicals on how you should appreciate each day. Even if you weren't spiritually inclined, this short book would be invaluable to you.

Now-a-days bookshelves at the store are filled with "how-to" books from people who claim to know what they are talking about. Some of them undoubtably are speaking from experience and their stories are more than likely able to spur you on in whatever pursuit you have picked up their book to read. Lucado is master here. His extensive background in asking the tough questions about life shine through in his sparklingly truthful language as you read about his advice. Tough advice assuredly...sometimes deceptively so. Max draws from admittedly broad resources as he focuses on the question, "navigating life's challenges with purpose and promise."

Max takes the reader on a spiritual, scripture filled journey into the everyday mundane that most people experience...well, everyday. What Mr. Lucado brings across brilliantly is how to approach each day with Gratitude, Fortitude and Grit. Old fashioned concepts that seem to escape the modern adult in today's troubled world. Every day is a challenge and how you think and react to the circumstances that approach you is the main focus of "Great Day, Every Day."

Mr. Lucado teaches in very clear language and forthright concepts how to live each day as if it were truly in your command. Catasrophe, loneliness, bitterness over your past, fear, shame and purposelessness are addressed in very practical means. His chapters are jam packed with helpful advise, experiencial concepts...
