This review is from: The Great Depression (History Channel - 4 video set) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"The Great Depression" is a four chapter documentary of the Great Depression during the 1930's. Each is interesting and can be watched separately as it will take over 3 hours to watch all four. They are 1) The New Deal, 2)Mass Media, 3) Marathon Dancing, and 4)Hard Times and American Hobo. This is a great historical time and shows the foundations of many of today's organizations, media and government programs. The History Channel does an excellent job and Mario Cuomo narrates and introduces each piece. It is interesting how his family survived during the Depression as well as thrived when the economy recoverd. I also learned tidbits on where "Depression Glass" came from and how it was connected to the movies.

I ordered this after reading the other three reviews. I was expecting to like it more. I didn't. It has a lot of what I'd call fluff - for example, they could have covered more relevant things than marathon dancing, and the advent of TV.
I don't think I would buy it again.

My husband and I travel the country in our motor home and often do not get a good signal for t.v. so we rely on dvd's for evening entertainment. We both enjoy documentories and this one was well worth the price. We buy most of our books and dvd's from amazon.com. A source we can trust.

Wonderful service. Had a problem with mailing the item, not sure what happened but the seller stayed in communication with me and promptly resent the item! Great customer service. Thanks!

I was completely disappointed in this pedestrian rehashing of the story of the Depression...why must we see the same footage of breadlines and wall street panic that has been used countless times in documentaries since the 1950's...There MUST be fresh images and film that we haven't seen to death..how's about a little research!!!...anyway, it IS the story of that period in history but there is nothing fresh here!

Nothing more depressing than Mario Cuomo,

The narrator was even more depressing than the event. Thank God those poor people didn't have to listen to Cuomo and go through economic depression at the same time

Great Depression or War on Business?,
This review is from: The Great Depression (DVD)
First of all, why would you want to listen to a statist like Mario Cuomo talk about another statist FDR and his failed policies that only prolonged the depression. There needs to be a fresh documentary from someone that wouldn't have just worshiped FDR like so many people did. This excuse for a man hurt our country in so many ways.
Roosevelt either wanted to start a Stalinist revolution or he just didn't have a clue. Actually there is a copy of a letter where FDR wrote to his treasury secretary for help in filling out his taxes, this guy gets way to much credit for being even close to smart. The one fact to remember about the Depression is that it ended only after Roosevelt's War on Business and Prosperity ended. |
