Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Concise, well laid out chapters that are nicely illustrated and highly informative. Full of details yet not mired in minutiae. An informative and fun read for the layman as well as the medical professional. The authors' vast knowledge of the subject is reflected in the clarity of the writing and the simplicity of the presentation. The quality of the book, its illustrations, paper and binding is very good and make it attractive enough to have a place on an elegant coffee table or a scholar's library and well worth the price. It is even better with the Amazon substantial discount.

Format: Hardcover
This is a concise, yet a comprehensive review of the history of great discoveries in medicine. From the cell to the most complicated tools of the trade. It starts with ancient medicine in Egypt, china, India and the Islamic medicine.
It has useful anecdotes regarding the origins of medical words such as "hormones". Most of the developments have landmark values, like the discovery of insulin, germs, vitamins, vaccines. It touches on major drugs such as beta blockers, digitalis, opiates, quinine. Many chapters are dedicated to surgical procedures such as cataract, open-heart surgery, and neurosurgery.
It has an excellent chapter on hormones and endocrinology. Most of the medical devices are covered such as stethoscope, thermometers, sphygmomanometer, endoscope, among others.
It is a good resource for lay persons and professionals alike.
I am reading it to use it during my encounters with my patients who appreciate anecdotes and brief historical comments on their conditions or just for the sake of humor.
By understanding the historical background and context, one can understand medicine much better.
