Tommy Shaw – The Great Divide

“The Great Divide is a story of love and life; of happiness and hope; of loss and discovery. It’s the story of a journey that spans generations, and is ultimately about trying to find your way home. And I’m as proud of this story as any I’ve ever told.”

Editorial Reviews

2011 release from the Classic Rock veteran and member of Styx, Damn Yankees and Shaw Blades. Though Shaw went on to become one of the brightest stars in Rock `n Roll, his early love of roots music always burned bright. The sense of direction instilled in him at that early age has led him on a remarkable path of musical discovery and storytelling, and ultimately, has led him home, to The Great Divide

5.0 out of 5 stars A very nice surprise. March 26, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Anyone who has ever examined the entire catalog of Tommy Shaw's recorded career (STYX, solo, DAMN YANKEES, Shaw*Blades, etc.) would recognize that among his many strengths (remarkable vocals, brilliant guitar and amazing song structure) is his diversity.

The pint sized rocker with the gigantic sound came from the deep south of Montgomery, Alabama and made it to the big show in the Windy City of Chicago, Illinois. He has since made his mark in the Big Apple before settling down once and for all in Los Angeles.

Growing up listening to The Grand Ole Oprey to writing songs for Ozzy Ozborne, Tommy has recorded his own tracks with incredible fluidity incorporating sounds from Heavy Metal to gospel, from progressive rock to country, including elements of folk on to the blues, and just about everything in between.

So for any fans of Tommy's (especially those who favored the Shaw*Blades album HALLUCINATION) would never be more than mildly surprised that Tommy would one day record an album of "Blue Grass music."

Blue Grass is one of my less favorite styles (more palletable than hip/hop, which beats rap and industrial rock), so I held my trepidations for this recording.

I was surprised, not by the notion of Tommy recording such an album but by the quality of the album recorded.

Tommy never strays far from his natural voice (no over-wrought southern twang drenched in nasal tones) no overly-clever hokey lyrics. The album is really just a down-home country album. In fact, the album is quite reminiscent of the Shaw*Blades debut.

The lead song on the album could easily fit on his brilliant albums WHAT IF and 7 DEADLY ZENS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Different, but real April 1, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I was really surprized to hear that Tommy Shaw was putting out a bluegrass album. Reluctant to purchase it, but love it. Tommy Shaw has the voice and talent to perform any type of music. I really like the title track, Shadows in the Moonlight, and I'll Be Coming Home. The whole album is great, but those three songs really stand out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different but good! May 31, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The Great Divide is a good solo cd from Tommy Shaw. People looking for "7 Deadly Zens" part 2 need not read any further. This is more like Shaw-Blades "My Hallucination" gone bluegrass. It is classified as bluegrass, but to me it seems like a "mainstream-ized" style of bluegrass. A lot like Alison Krauss, who coincidentaly is on the album. I can appreciate Tommy letting musicians whose focus is bluegrass have the solos on most of the tracks, but I would have appreciated hearing him play more mandolin and maybe trading solos on a couple of songs. Overall it is a good effort, but I don't think it is his best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dont kow what to say... January 22, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have been a Huge Tommy Shaw fan and have had almost all of his solo stuff since he left Styx. He is one of the best lyricists out there who is able to create great poetry and put it to good flowing music without it seeming to be forced. Andall of his work has a great message that most guys especially can relate to in one way or another. This is the same way but its an entirely different genre of tunes. He has gone into the country relm and i felt like I was on front porch in the Apalachians listening to some tunes while uncle jethro works on the still. Not what i expected but still enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Divide= Great Music December 9, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I am an unabashed Styx fanatic, and own everything they have ever published. Still... Bluegrass? It made me remember why Boat on the River is an International hit, while barely being recognized outside of a Styx concert. Almost 25 years ago, I found myself sitting in an underground club in Ankara, Turkey when the DJ (via my interpreter) asked if there was anything I would like to hear from my country. I blushed as I said that my favorite group was one they certainly never heard of... Styx. Everyone listening immediately perked up and I was told that Boat on the River was a number one hit there and still very popular. After listening to Great Divide, I found myself reflecting on that night and realized that I shouldn't have been suprised. I purchased the Album and CD. Upon receiving them, I immediately put the album on. I had one of those moments where it seemed that no time had elapsed, while at the same time feeling like I had been deeply engrossed for a long time when it came time to turn the album over. After finishing, I had a whole new respect for Tommy. WOW! What a moving experience. I had been expecting a jangling, foot stomping hardcore Bluegrass affair, and got a tight melodic and more mainstream country experience instead... and I LOVED it. I carefully placed the album back in it's cover and took out the CD, then called my wife, and 10 year old son into the room and made them sit down and listen. They both enjoyed it a great deal, even if they were a bit irritated I didn't just wait until the next day's road trip to play it for them.

In a nutshell: The album sounds incredible, and the CD doesn't stray from the warmth of that experience. If you are a Tommy Shaw fan, a Country fan, or of course, a Bluegrass fan, I cannot imagine that a single track on this album will disappoint.

If you're a fan of Tommy or bluegrass, you might enjoy this album. I purchased several and sent them to friends. I don't burn and copy. The musicians get ripped off enough.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great voice, poor genre
Tommy Shaw's vocal range and talent has never been in question. But why he felt the need to do bluegrass is interesting. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars a waste of a wondrous opportunity
Tommy is great singer and writer. I can't believe he WASTED a great voice and musician like Alison Kraus. The album is so so... maybe I need to give it a few more listens.
