Book Description

September 2005
The richest collection of great hunting and fishing humor, wry wit, verbal and cartoon slapstick from all sources, for all ages and tastes.

From the acknowledged masters of their form such as Pat McManus, Ed Zern, Bill Heavey, Paul Quinnett and Charles Waterman yet stuffed with the new (and new old) kids on the block-Rick Tosches, Steven Mulak, Dave Ames, Andy Duffy, Michael Sawyers and Sam Venable.

Terrific tales and quips from the humor field by Henry Beard, P.J. O'Rourke, Ian Frazier, Lewis Grizzard.

The widest universe of subjects-birddogs to deep sea fishing to raucous duck dinners to how a guide handles a bore to the only humor covers on (ever to grace) Outdoor Life.

Spiced with never or rarely seen pieces by Bruce Cochran, James Thurber, Gene and Barry Wensel, Joe Bob Briggs, Jean Shepherd and others, and jokes by Johnny Carson, Homer Circle and Milton Berle.

Cartoons by the smartest illustrators and the history of outdoor humor on radio and the small and big screen including the best Elmer Fudd/Porky Pig/Daffy Duck and "that wascally wabbit" hunting cartoon shorts, ribald songs, tall tales, atypical Ole and Sven jokes, novelty fishing lures and bumpersticker humor.

From high literary to low ribaldry, an authoritative collection for quiet chuckles in the appreciation of superb humor writing alternated with guffaw-producing comic tales of what can go wrong (and right) in the pursuit of our favorite field sports.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outdoor hilarity, November 19, 2005

This review is from: The Great Duck Misunderstanding & Other Stories: The Very Best of American Fishing & Hunting Humor (Paperback)
After a rousing introduction, Peterson bestows on the lucky reader the writings of P.J. O'Rourke, Jean Shepard, and James Thurber on the manly pastimes of hunting and fishing. Russell Chatham joins in with the title story and women keep pace with Nancy Anisfield on a grouse hunt. The contents are woven in an artful fashion so the book can be enjoyed at random or read from cover to cover. Two camo-covered thumbs up for this fine addition to the humor bookshelf, a bargain many times over for the hunter or fisherperson who knows how ridiculous they look in those Filson togs.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the humorous hunter, April 26, 2006
This review is from: The Great Duck Misunderstanding & Other Stories: The Very Best of American Fishing & Hunting Humor (Paperback)
Hunters and fishermen who appreciate humor will love THE GREAT DUCK MISUNDERSTANDING AND OTHER STORIES: THE VERY BEST OF AMERICAN FISHING & HUNTING HUMOR: it reflects gently on the ironies and inconsistencies of such varied topics as the deer camp, the symbolism of a wild duck attached to a roadside stand, and the impact of TV hunting shows. A fine compendium of laughs by some of the great outdoors writers of the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hunters and fishermen are breeds unto themselves. Hilarious!, July 14, 2007
This review is from: The Great Duck Misunderstanding & Other Stories: The Very Best of American Fishing & Hunting Humor (Paperback)
My brother-in-law is receiving a used book from me. I made the wonderful mistake of perusing the book; I savored all of it. He is getting the book with my comments. I wished for more selections. The stories are so much fun!
