Book Description

July 3, 2006
History can be exciting if you are THERE. Relive history as Carl and the eagle help save and preserve the ancient Unangan culture of the Aleutian Islands. Join Carl, a 12-year-old boy living in Unalaska, Alaska, as he is caught in a severe storm and washed up on a small deserted island and is saved by Altug. Carl comes face to face with his ancestors and discovers he is a Unangan like the very first people to come the islands, centuries before. Altug tells him stories about his ancestors and their struggle to survive the harsh environment of the islands and about the exploitation of otters and seals, for their fur, that ripped apart the Unangan culture. Altug inspires Carl to help unite the culture of the ancient world with his world today, and Carl is eager to tell people about his adventure.

Review

"Join Carl, a 12-year-old boy living in Unalaska, as he is caught in a severe storm and washed up on a small, deserted island and is saved by Altug. Carl comes face to face with his ancestors and discovers he is an Unangnan, like the very first people to come to the islands centuries before."

Excerpt: "Through blurry eyes, he could see someone walking down the beach towards him. The closer the man came, the more uneasy Carl became. No one lived on this small, rocky island as far as he knew, and the man walking towards him looked ancient and dressed differently from anyone he had ever seen before. He wore sealskin clothes with a wooden visor on his head, which was decorated with sea shells." -- Anchorage Daily News

This review is from: The Great Eagle Spirit (Paperback)
This is a story about a modern age 13 year old boy in Unalaska who has a boat wreck and goes on an extraordinary journey. He is taken by a spirit elder back to the days when Unalaska was a Native Village, before the time of the Russian invasion. He learns the ways of his ancestors and why it is important to understand your culture's past to make a better future. He learns to respect the old ways rather then to think of them as weird or old fashioned. The boy learns to respect his grandfather's ways and learn from him. My class of third graders really enjoyed this story and were able to identify landmarks spoken of in the book, like the river behind the town, and the cliffs where the Eagles rest.
