Editorial Reviews

Many elements of this German lyric baritone's artistry-his interpretive insights, his note-perfect control, his diction, his rhythmic sense, his tonal shadings-combined to make him the most celebrated lieder singer of his age. This 11-CD set collects his landmark EMI recordings, which pair him with illustrious pianists like Moore, Richter, Sawallisch and Barenboim. Bonus audio interviews include many thoughts and observations of Fischer-Dieskau's that have never been published before; they join entire discs devoted to the song cycles of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, Mahler and many more!

This is the most comprehensive set of recordings for the great Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau that I have ever seen released. Featuring 11 CD's and spanning the duration of his long and brilliant career, any collector would have to be crazy not to purchase this. Digitally remastered so that it contains a much higher quality and level of sound, these CD's will not disappoint. I recommend this as a gift for any lover of classic music.

Format: Audio CD
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau died today at age 86 years. Born in Berlin in 1925 he became the leading interpreter of lieder until his final concert in 1993. His artistry was unmatched in the annals of lieder performance. After his retirement he continued to share his knowledge as teacher, a conductor and an author. For many of us he will always remain the pinnacle of lieder singing even though there are now more baritones of quality who emulate his approach to Mahler, Wolf, Schumann, Schubert and Strauss. He matched beauty of voice with complete communication of text and was ever the symbol of corroboration with his pianists.

One this collection of eleven CDs he is joined by Gerald Moore, Richter, Sawallisch and Barenboim in performing the following exemplary works: Schubert's Die Schöne Müllerin, Winterreise, Schwanengesang, and Popular Lieder; Schumann's Liederkreis; Brahms's Die Schöne Magelone; Mahler's Rückert-Lieder; Wolf's Popular Lieder; Richard Strauss's Popular Lieder; and a selection of songs Loewe, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Liszt, Cornelius. On a separate disc `Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau -- Thoughts and Observations' are two invaluable interviews with Jon Tolansky.

Though there are many recordings of the art of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau this boxed set is probably the most comprehensive. He will be deeply missed but his legacy lives on in the many singers he tutored. Grady Harp, May 12

Dietrich Fischer-Diskau ia THE BEST LIEDER INTERPRETER/SINGER yet! We saw/heard him in Chicago in the winter of 1970. We sat way up, in the very back, and could understand EVERY WORD AND NUANCE! These CD's do full justice to the man and his music! Thank you!!

Since the 1950s D. Fischer-Dieskau has defined the art of lieder-singing. This 11 cd set brings together his landmark recordings for EMI, among them the song cycles of Schubert (CD 1 - 3), Schumann (CD 5), Brahms (CD 6), Wolf (CD 8), and Mahler (CD 7). In this collection we can enjoy his performings together with Gerald Moore, Sviatoslav Richter, Wolfgang Sawallisch and Daniel Barenboim among others.

The Art of German Lieder recorded by arguably its greatest proponent of the last century. One could spend years attempting to understand the beauty contained in this box set. Also this set could be considered as
a wonderful introductory overview of the Art of Lieder, at its height.
