5.0 out of 5 stars This is quite simply the best CD I own March 8, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
I wanted to wait to write this review until I'd owned the CD for a few months so that the "new CD" effect wouldn't bias me.

I have well over 1000 CDs, and this is the best CD I own.

For comparison, my collection includes the following CDs that I also absolutely love:

Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
Dream Theater - Scenes from a Memory
Enchant - Juggling 9 or Dropping 10
Redemption - Snowfall on Judgement Day
Vanden Plas - The God Thing
Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element, Pt. 1
Alter Bridge - Blackbird
Kamelot - The Black Halo
Sphere of Souls - From the Ashes...
Ark - Burn The Sun

as well as classic CDs such as Rush's "Moving Pictures," Boston's first album, and Yes' "Close to the Edge." (FWIW, I own the entire catalogue by most of these artists).

I list those CDs for two reasons: (1) to give you an idea of the type of CDs against which "The Great Escape" compared favorably (for me), and (2) If you *like* Seventh Wonder, check out the above CDs and bands.

In "The Great Escape," Seventh Wonder displays astounding musicianship, soaring vocals by one of the best I've ever heard, complex musical arrangements, absolutely gorgeous melodies, and lush, tight harmonies, as well as deep, insightful lyrics. While those qualities *can* be found elsewhere in rare instances, what sets TGE apart from other great CDs is that it's also highly *listenable*, and -- dare I say it? -- **catchy**. On several occasions my girlfriend has asked me to put this CD on because she has the melody of one or another of its songs running through her head (she doesn't normally listen to this type of music).

If you loved Seventh Wonder's previous two releases ("Mercy Falls" and "Waiting for the Wings"), this is a must-buy for you. If you're unfamiliar with them, but like *any* of the CDs listed above, you truly owe it to yourself to give it a shot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refer to the poem "Aniara" January 22, 2011
By Paul N.
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Let me just start by saying that I've found a truism in music of all genres over time: the "catchiest" music usually is the most quickly appreciated, but it's also the quickest to fade from memory. This truism challenged my appreciation of The Great Escape at first. Let me explain.

I was expecting another album like Mercy Falls. Frankly, I think Mercy Falls is one of the most ingenious albums ever. I think the story is good, and the arrangement and melodies are simply extraordinary. The album was breathtaking, memorable, melodious, and powerful. Said another way, Mercy Falls was Seventh Wonder's "Scenes from a Memory", but frankly they did it better than Dream Theater ever could. I most appreciate memorable melodies, where Mercy Falls excels.

Enter The Great Escape. Frankly on first listen, all I heard was a bunch of random pieces strung together, most that weren't so memorable at first. I KNEW I had to keep listening to it, and sure enough, my above truism came to fruition: I started to pick apart the album and realize what it was - a stroke of genius. It took a good dozen repeats and devoted listening. Stick with it and you'll probably get the same reaction.

With an album that is perhaps far more intense and even mature than Mercy Falls, what the Great Escape lacks in Mercy Fall's memorable melodies makes up in deeper, more complex, more layered vocals and music. Where Seventh Wonder came of age with Mercy Falls, they achieved mastery with The Great Escape.

While all the songs are great, the title track The Great Escape, at like 25 minutes, is astounding. This was the song I understood least upon the first 5-10 listens, but it is now the one I prefer most.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really growing on me! January 10, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Context: I really loved the Mercy Falls album. It invoked similar feelings I had when I first heard Dream Theater's Metropolis SFAM. Yes, the voice acting was absolutely atrocious (Doctor in particular) but the infectious song writing and choruses, along with one of the tightest recordings ever heard made the album great for me.

For this album I was expecting more of the same... great catchy songs, complex arrangements, and one of the greatest singers in rock music period. Upon first listen, all I heard was complex arrangements, a couple of cheesy lyrical lines, and a 30 minute long song that didn't make much sense to me at first. After about 10 listens to the album, I'm still not ready to say that I like it more than Mercy Falls, but it is probably equal. It is a more intense album certainly with longer songs. A minor critique I have is the 30 minute song, "The Great Escape" which really should have been broken into separate tracks. I don't always have 30 minutes to listen to a song and I hate having to fast forward 15 minutes to get to where I left off -if I even remember where I left off. Other than that, the singer's vocal melodies are almost always catchy and melodic. The band is extraordinarily tight and are so perfect they sound machine like at times. The stand out instrument by far is the bass guitarist. He is phenomenal! Bass is usually my least favorite aspect to rock music, but this guy just makes every passage as interesting as possible. Both guitarist and keyboardist have great solos and riffs throughout the 60 minutes. The guitarist puts musicality and harmony before speed and technicality, though he possesses both in abundance. There is also alot of diversity within each song...

5.0 out of 5 stars great album, great band
Great album, my second purchase of Seventh Wonder. Wizeman, Alley Cat, and The Anglemaker are definitely worth checking out. Long tunes, but they aren't boring or repetitive.
