About the Author

Judith Miller is an established and internationally renowned author of books in the field of interior design and architecture. In addition to being co-founder of the hugely successful Miller's Antiques Price Guide, she was responsible for writing the best-selling Period Details, Period Style, Country Style, and The Style Sourcebook, as well as Wooden Houses. She also contributes to magazines, radio, and television in Europe and the U.S. On top of this already heavy workload, she somehow manages to find time to present four television series on interiors, including the hugely popular BBC Television's "'House Detectives"'.

Judith Miller began collecting in the 1960s while a student at Edinburgh University in Scotland. She has since extended and reinforced her knowledge of antiques and design through international research, becoming one of the world's leading experts in the field. In 1979 she co-founded the international bestseller Miller's Antiques Price Guide and has since written more than 100 books, which are held in high regard by collectors and dealers. Judith Miller appears regularly on TV and radio. She is an expert on the BBC's "Antiques Roadshow" and co-hosts the popular BBC TV series "The House Detectives," "ITV's "Antiques Trail," and Discovery's "It's Your Bid." She has appeared on "The Martha Stewart Show" and CNN. She is a regular lecturer and contributor to numerous newspapers and magazines, including Financial Times, BBC Homes & Antiques and House & Garden. She has lectured extensively, including at the V&A in London and the Smithsonian in Washington.

This book takes to over twenty residences in a variety of settings. The author has divided them into five categories: rural, waterside, mountain and hillside, woodland and urban escapes. Each residence is shown with several luscious photographs and accompanied by copy describing various aspects of the owners idea of an escape, details of the restoration or building and descriptions of the residence itself. My one complaint was that it seemed a bit uneven with regard to depth of coverage given to each residence. The layout includes larger photos with lots of thumbnail photos, making it a jam-packed feast for the eyes without being busy. The photos are so lovely you can almost fall into the pages in a dream

GREAT coffee table book, or just to look through and DREAM of being able to "escape" to one of these havens. The photographs are so full of detail you can practically feel yourself sinking into the pillows.

Helpful information with each entry as well; all in all, very well worth the cost...
