About the Author

As founder and Managing Director of Alampi & Associates LLC, Jim Alampi has devoted more than thirteen years to coaching CEOs, executive teams and Boards of Directors in the areas of strategy, leadership, execution and business improvement. He’s provided advisory services to or spoken before almost 10,000 CEOs and senior executives regarding the lessons he learned as a senior executive at three publicly held companies and as the founder of three start-up companies.

His career has been varied, including work at every type of business – from fledgling privately-held startups to large publicly-held companies. Jim was the first outside CEO at e-Chemicals Inc., the industrial chemical industry's first B2B e-commerce distributor and supply chain execution provider; Chairman, CEO and President at Insurance Auto Auctions, Inc. (NASDAQ), a $325 million provider of total loss vehicle and claims processing services; President at Van Waters & Rogers Inc. ($1.5 billion), Senior Vice President at Univar Corporation and its subsidiaries (a $2.8 billion NYSE corporation) and Chief Operating Officer at VWR Corporation (NASDAQ $625 million)

As an entrepreneur who has led three professional services start-up companies, Jim is also keenly aware of the specific needs and hurdles faced by startup companies.

Throughout his career, Jim has gained tremendous insight into the efficient operation of businesses and the predictable patterns that emerge in companies that properly execute their business strategy. His advice, derived directly from these insights, always includes requiring CEOs to ask more questions and give fewer answers, and to create “stop-doing lists” that further focus the executive team’s time and energy on the most important and critical aspects of the business.

Using the tools and concepts you’ll be reading here, Jim has helped numerous CEOs and executives in companies ranging from $25 million to $1+ billion in revenue, all privately-, closely- or family-owned.

A long-term member of the National Association of Corporate Directors and a director and/or chairman of more than 20 for-profit public and private company boards, chairing four of them, the demands on Jim’s time exceeds his ability to work with every CEO who asks. It is his sincere hope, through this book, to reach even more CEOs, executives and teams in need of what he can show them – people like you.

What a great book not only for business executives, but also for our everyday lives! Suppose every family talked about, wrote down, and lived by their core values? How about teaching our kids core values and how important they are to function successfully in our society? This book teaches all of us how to set goals, and also how to achieve them in logical bite size pieces. Jim's book has helped me take a look at what I want to achieve in my working life (and retirement), how to prioritize, and how to use 90 day increments to get everything done! Wow! What a concept. This will certainly help me get the important things done (tied into my core values) and not sweat the small stuff. As working moms, we need help prioritizing AND executing all the daily tasks that overwhelm us sometimes. This book helps with the hedgehog principles and teaches us to not waste our time trying to be everything to everyone, but focus on the important things.
Good life lessons here!

For those of you who've heard Jim speak and enjoyed his delivery, you'll feel right at home. I could just hear his voice as I read the words. As always, his thoughts and concepts are right on the money. It's always funny to me that these ideas are so practical and obvious and yet so hard to actually implement without a trusted advisor to help keep you on track.

JIm Alampi has written an excellent book to help you grow or improve your business. The book illustrates a great roadmap which is clear to understand in its first read, and is useful to come back to as your strategic plan progresses to retune your planning and execution. As you return to review some key aspects, I believe you will get additional insight to the book's advice and concepts. I also appreciate that the author makes available on his website many of the tools used as examples in how to set your plan, particularly the "execution roadmap".

Jim's Great to Excellent is truly a guidebook on what it takes to overcome the barriers that every company owner has to deal with. This is especially true if the CEO started the company.

I have championed Jim since I first had him speak to my Vistage 29 group over 10 years ago. The wisdom he shares freely is why I have had him return to remind my members of the work they need to do to get to the next level of growth. His guidance is invaluable since it comes from someone who has traveled the path and had to break through the various barriers in taking companies to the next stage of growth.

When you have someone who has run billion dollar companies talk to you it is a gift.

Jim guides you so that you understand the barriers you have to deal with at the pivotal points onto the next level of growth. Your task should you implement and execute as the business owner is to realize that your leadership and ability to grow personally and professionally, your values, and the culture you create are unique. As a guide, Jim shows you the path. What's also nice is that Jim is just a phone call away.

When you need a coach, Jim and his team are there to help confront your barriers. The book is Jim again sharing with you freely what you need to know.

Remember it is not what you know that gets you in trouble. It's what you know that just ain't so that does. Jim puts you in the learning mode to make what is necessary possible. And at the same time gets you in touch with what is your contribution to all those who you serve.

If you're a CEO at a company that is struggling to grow, then Great to Excellent is the book for you. What was `good enough' to get you to the current size business you have today, needs to be `excellent' to get you where you want to go. In the book Jim identifies natural barriers that are getting in your way, and provides a step by step proven formula to breakthrough those obstacles that are holding your business back. With a focus on execution and growth, Jim explains why and how to delegate, what's involved with getting the right people in the right seat on the bus, and what processes are required to provide consistent high-quality delivery to customers. Great to Excellent is a thought provoking guide to anyone in a leadership position, and provides easy to implement methods for success with real life examples that ring true to any entrepreneur. The results are tangible. We have implemented Jim's processes and grown our company 2.5x over the last 5 years.

I've been waiting for Jim Alampi to put his considerable expertise and knowledge about business and leadership in a book. GREAT TO EXCELLENT takes his experience, his depth and breadth of knowledge, and his wisdom and vision and puts it into a finely tuned, easy-to-follow book that lays down a road map for the growth and success of a business.

I've known Jim for 35 years. I've observed and worked with him in most of his executive positions and I have the greatest respect for his talents and his common sense. I'm happy to recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the the thought processes of a very smart, results-oriented, and humane executive.
