Great album with dub influences,

If you hear this cd for the first time you will notice that it's different then other Michael Rose albums. The sound is modern and it gives you a more 'dubby' feeling. I really like the horn and the guitar on the music. Recommended!

This is a great album!,
This review is from: Great Expectations (Audio CD)
This album is varied and includes some very original new tunes. 'Momento' is an uplifting and upbeat raggaton track while 'Letter to Myself' is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard Michael Rose sing. This track is almost like a soul tune. 'Mama Africa' is a haunting and sparse nyabinghi anthem and many of the other tracks are heavy roots tunes. The album is an interesting mix of styles and also a nice mix of digital and live instruments. I have no hesitation recommending this album and the Dub version of the album (Dub Expectations). Enjoy!

Solid Michael Rose, but doesn't live up to "Great" expectations,
By Miami Nights (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Great Expectations (Audio CD)
If you've been listening to Michael Rose the past several years, then, by now, you'll know what to expect from most of his solo albums. Much of his solo output has come out on the Heartbeat label, and on those CDs, you get Michael Rose in full effect, and you can hear in the music, how much effort and money was put into the proceedings.
"Great Expectations" is not on Heartbeat, but, rather, on a label called Rhythm Club Music. It's not overly produced, which can be a good thing much of the time, but, at times, while listening to this CD, one gets the nagging feeling that it's like a low-budget movie with too low of a budget. While the backing musicians are solid, they're not all too distinctive, and it's hard to live up to the musicians that Rose has worked with in the past, many of them legends. Rose makes a lot of solo albums, and he's bound to have some lesser albums from time to time, which he has, but, here, unfortunately, he just sounds rather tired. Perhaps it's just that he's not that inspired, and did this as a one-off, just one more for the coffers. Hardcore Rose fans will find some pleasure in this very mellow affair, but between his very relaxed delivery and merely passable music backing without much to raise it above studio-man work, it's hard to say this is a must-buy. It's for completists only.
