Book Description

July 1, 1995
[This is part 2 of a 2 part cassette audiobook edition]

In The Great Explorers--an abridgement of his two-volume magnum opus, The European Discovery of America--the late Samuel Eliot Morison, one of the most eminent American historians of the 20th century, vividly describes the early voyages that led to the discovery of the New World. Based on Morison's own trips, by plane, to the places the early discoverers landed, and on massive research into their maps, travelogues, and means of navigation, it tells, as no other book does, what the experience of these early explorers was. Morison describes their fear of sailing uncharted waters, their encounters with natives, their joy--and surprise--at discovering new land, and enriches his story with the photographs and maps he made while retracing the great voyages.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This edition is a welcome and handy reference to the major explorations, written by one of the most eminent historians of the century. --Bookman's Weekly

The best of [Morison's classic] accounts of the first voyages to North and South America were distilled. . . into this nicely illustrated abridgement. --Philadelphia Inquirer

In this magisterial work, the late Samuel Eliot Morison presents the voyages of the Cabots, Gilbert, Frobisher, Columbus, Magellan, Drake, and others. This paperback is chock full of maps, seafaring techniques, and all the excitement of a good adventure yarn. --Cultural Information Service

5.0 out of 5 stars A Superior Example of Both Scholarship and Writing, October 27, 2001
By
Patrick Doherty (Birmingham, Alabama, USA) - See all my reviews
As usual Morison's work is a superior example of both scholarship and writing. Many of his sources for research were not written in English since most of the historians who have studied the voyages of discovery south of the Caribbean have been either Spaniards, Portuguese, Brazilians, Uruguayans, Chileans or Paraguayans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Who would not love a book like this, April 28, 2001
By
Aaron Brown (Portland, OR USA) - See all my reviews
The discovery of the new world is one of the most exciting periods to study. Here is a book that has not only has Drake, Magellan, and Columbus but has the story of less famous mariners as well. This is not a book that has to be read all at once. You can read about one of the explorers and when you are sick of reading about storms and starvation put it aside for awhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars History of Great Sea Voyages, November 4, 2007
Samuel Eliot Morison in this small volume for the subject, just under 800 pages, gathers material from 'The European Discovery of America: The Northern Voyages, A.D. 500-1600' and 'The European Discovery of America: The Southern Voyages, A.D. 1492-1616' to describe for us the arrival of Columbus, Drake, Magellan, and many others. The size of the book makes for a handy reference book for those who are studying these voyages or for those who want an overview of them. This abridgement of his great works is also filled with illustrations and maps. His research and knowledge of this material is made obvious. This is a well-written book that will be appreciated by any reader. The author is able to convey the motives, bravery and experiences of these early voyages that led to the discovery of the New World.
