Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Studies show that 80% of people over 50 have at least one medical condition of the feet. Think of all the common activities that would be uncomfortable for someone with persistent foot pain: golfing, watching parades (or any other event that require standing for a long time), sightseeing while on vacation---even walking around the grocery store once a week could be uncomfortable. Limited mobility due to foot pain can also lead to other problems, including weight gain and increased social isolation.

Fortunately, proper footcare in midlife and beyond can help you maintain or regain your active and independent lifestyle. This book will help you find the perfect shoes for your feet or lifestyle, determine which insoles and orthotics are right for you (and which ones to AVOID at all costs), understand when foot surgery may be called for, and perform home exercises that can prevent or relieve foot pain. The book also contains a helpful appendix of foot care products and resources---helping you sort through all those confusing choices at your local shoestore and drug store.

With the proper care, our feet are designed to last a lifetime of daily service, enduring a cumulative impact of tens of billions of pounds and carrying us more than 100,000 miles during our lives. "Great Feet For Life: Footcare And Footwear For Healthy Aging" by podiatry expert Paul Langer (Clinical Faculty Member, University of Minnesota Medical School) provides simple, effective instructions for self-care on every aspect including nail care, calluses and corns, shoe selection, skin care, arthritis, heel pain, hammertoes and bunions, shoe selection, shoe comfort, insoles and orthotics, footcare products, as well as common foot conditions and injuries. All throughout this superbly organized and presented footcare manual, the emphasis is on staying active, maintaining good balance, and preventing falls. "Great Feet For Life" is especially recommended to the attention of the non-specialist general reader with footcare concerns or questions, and would make an invaluable addition to both personal and community library Health & Medicine instructional reference collections.

One review panned this book and on that I almost did not buy it. Glad I did not listen. Well rounded book with lots of information-helpful information on problems, buying shoes, even trimming toenails. If you are getting older or having some issues and want to learn more about this important part of your body, this is definitely the book you want.

I got this book from the library and am glad I did. The most common phrase is probably "see your podiatrist" or "see your doctor". If you want to actually learn much about your feet try some other book. On the positive side, it does provide a list of websites for purchase of shoe inserts, orthotics, etc.
