Patton: One of the greatest screen biographies ever produced, this monumental film runs nearly three hours, won seven Academy Awards, and gave George C. Scott the greatest role of his career. It was released in 1970 when protest against the Vietnam War still raged at home and abroad, and many critics and moviegoers struggled to reconcile current events with the movie's glorification of Gen. George S. Patton as a crazy-brave genius of World War II. How could a movie so huge in scope and so fascinated by its subject be considered an anti-war film? The simple truth is that it's not--Patton is less about World War II than about the rise and fall of a man whose life was literally defined by war, and who felt lost and lonely without the grand-scale pursuit of an enemy. George C. Scott embodies his role so fully, so convincingly, that we can't help but be drawn to and fascinated by Patton as a man who is simultaneously bound for hell and glory. Filmed on an epic scale at literally dozens of European locations, Patton does not embrace war as a noble pursuit, nor does it deny the reality of war as a breeding ground for heroes. Through the awesome achievement of Scott's performance and the film's grand ambition, Patton shows all the complexities of a man who accepted his role in life and (like Scott) played it to the hilt. --Jeff Shannon

The Longest Day: This special collector's commemorative edition has been issued in honor of the June 6, 1944 Allied invasion of France, which marked the beginning of the end of Nazi domination over Europe. The attack involved 3,000,000 men, 11,000 planes and 4,000 ships, comprising the largest armada the world has ever seen. The Longest Day is a vivid, hour-by-hour recreation of this historic event. Featuring a stellar international cast, and told from the perspectives of both sides, it is a fascinating look at the massive preparations, mistakes, and random events that determined the outcome of one of the biggest battles in history. Winner of two 1962 Oscars® (Special Effects and Cinematography), The Longest Day ranks as one of Hollywood's truly great war films.

Tora! Tora! Tora!: "Sir, there's a large formation of planes coming in from the north, 140 miles, 3 degrees east." "Yeah? Don't worry about it." This is just one of the many mishaps chronicled in Tora! Tora! Tora! The epic film shows the bombing of Pearl Harbor from both sides in the historic first American-Japanese coproduction: American director Richard Fleischer oversaw the complicated production (the Japanese sequences were directed by Toshio Masuda and Kinji Fukasaku, after Akira Kurosawa withdrew from the film), wrestling a sprawling story with dozens of characters into a manageable, fairly easy-to-follow film. The first half maps out the collapse of diplomacy between the nations and the military blunders that left naval and air forces sitting ducks for the impending attack, while the second half is an amazing re-creation of the devastating battle. While Tora! Tora! Tora! lacks the strong central characters that anchor the best war movies, the real star of the film is the climactic 30-minute battle, a massive feat of cinematic engineering that expertly conveys the surprise, the chaos, and the immense destruction of the only attack by a foreign power on American soil since the Revolutionary War. The special effects won a well-deserved Oscar, but the film was shut out of every other category by, ironically, the other epic war picture of the year, Patton. --Sean Axmaker

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great Book, January 1, 2012

This review is from: The Great Fox War Movies (Patton - Special Edition / The Longest Day / Tora! Tora! Tora! - Special Edition) (DVD)
This book is on the making of the three great 20th. Century Fox World War II Epics: "The Longest Day," "Patton" and "Tora Tora Tora." This book is authored by the creators and publishers of the great "Cinema Retro" magazine, a magazine devoted to the films of the 1960s and '70s. I am not reviewing the DVDs which I already owned prior to purchasing the book.
"The Longest Day" is my all-time favorite film other than the James Bond films. For years I have thirsted for a book on the making of this classic film. And while only of a third of this book is devoted to that film, that is enough. This book is devoted to the making of the films with numerous color and black and white photos, other photos of lobby cards and posters from around the world, and pictures of various memorabilia from each film. My favorite part is the section on scenes that were cut out. For instance, there is a scene of a bloody Rod Steiger in "The Longest Day." Yet he only appears in one brief scene in the film. I have always wondered why only one scene? This answers the question. There is also a scene of Roddy McDowall fighting with another G.I. on the ship taking him to Utah Beach. This is not in the film either. There are sections devoted to deleted scenes in "Patton" and "Tora Tora Tora" as well. The writers also include their own brief review of each film and the events that occured upon the film's release. I particularly loved a picture of an ad for the reserved-seat showing of "The Longest Day" on Broadway in New York. A reserved orchestra seat for an evening performance was $3.00!! (I remember when my parents took me on a trip to Manhattan and playing in a row on reserved seat were "Lawrence of Arabia," the Brando "Mutiny on the Bounty" and "The Longest Day." Can you imagine three epics of this caliber playing today? By the way, the unfortunate release of "Lawrence of Arabia" the same year is probably the reason "The Longest Day" didn't receive the Best Picture Oscar of 1962.)
The book also has biographical segments on actors like George C. Scott and Karl Malden in "Patton." You will also learn in detail what Darryl F. Zanuck had to do to get the great John Wayne to appear in "The Longest Day."
I absolutely loved this book. I'm only surprised I didn't read it sooner. Highly recommended.

I purchased this set and the DVD's (6) Were Damaged. I requested a replacement. The Replacement was also damaged. The problem is the DVD's are in paper inserts in the Book. They are not protected. In the packaging process by FOX ( Not Amazon ) The DVD's get all scratched and will not play.

4.0 out of 5 stars Can't vouch for content, but packaging is really nice, September 10, 2008

As I said in the title, I can't vouch for the content as this was purchased as a gift for my Dad. However, the packaging is great. I thought Amazon made a mistake and sent a book instead of the DVD package, but it turned out to be BOTH a book and the DVD's (guess I should have read the description better). In any case, I know they are classic movies and this deluxe presentation will make an impressive gift.
