Book Description

September 13, 2003
Great Gardens in Small Spaces features forty-four wonderful and exquisitely photographed California gardens, specifically treating the small garden, its particular challenges and its abundant opportunities and rewards. Most people do not have the luxury of grand estatelike spaces, but are confined to much smaller plots. This book is unique in its focus on rarely photographed, small, exquisitely detailed gardens of both northern and southern California, and encompasses gardens in the cities of Venice, Pasadena, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Laguna Beach, and Carmel, among others. Great Gardens in Small Spaces will show gardeners with limited space how to design beautiful oases on a compact yet fulfilling scale.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Beautiful and practical, Dardick and Levick's guide to 44 wee California gardens should inspire readers as much as it helps them. The book covers every sort of garden, from dry to lush, from Chinese ornamental to English cottage. In Venice, for example, Dardick showcases an "An Ornamental Edible Garden" that uses a thick ficus hedge to protect five raised beds of artfully arranged eggplants, zucchinis, lettuce, carrots and broccoli. In Carmel, she finds a long, narrow walkway transformed into "A Tropical Scene" by lobelia, passionflowers and ferns. In Burbank, she shows a "A Desert Garden," filled with potted cacti, that serves its owner's "laboratory, observation, and conservation space." Dardick's precise chapter titles allow readers to quickly locate gardens that address the problems they are having with their own yards, whether they want to create "An Illusion of Expansiveness" or design "A Drought Tolerant Garden." And her opening essay provides an easy introduction to landscaping small spaces, with suggestions to keep plants petite, leave an open area in the center of the plot and consider color carefully. "Details are crucial in a small area," she writes. Levick's elegantly composed color photographs help readers see how these principles have been applied, or modified, by real gardeners-almost every page in the book contains one of her beautiful images. Such a well-designed and useful book deserves a place on every gardener's bookshelf. 300 color illustrations.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth getting, August 31, 2006
This review is from: Great Gardens in Small Spaces: California Havens (Hardcover)
The photos in this book were not very crisp and there was not much information identifying what was in the photo. The text about each garden was not very helpful either. Photos and text were overall not very inspiring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this Book, June 13, 2009
This review is from: Great Gardens in Small Spaces: California Havens (Hardcover)
I have had this book for many years. I consult it so frequently that the pages are falling apart. I love the fact that each garden shows what is possible when space and other elements are "challenging." There is enough variety in the landscape to cover a wide number of situations.

Because of this book, I made up my mind that I would always get gardening books from Rizzoli. I used to get gardening books from Timber Press, but was so frustrated by the writing, which wasn't very good.

Every time I look at GREAT GARDENS IN SMALL SPACES, I find yet more details (yes, even in the photographs) which escaped me before. The book is about idiosyncracy and imagination. I love it. It freed me from thinking only one way about gardens.

I also appreciate that the gardens are all in California, where I live. I often buy gardening books and am frustrated because only a handful of examples end up being from California gardens...

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality for the price, October 26, 2006

This review is from: Great Gardens in Small Spaces: California Havens (Hardcover)
I agree with K., the printing quality of the photos was very poor. Although the gardens were beautiful and the ideas helpful, they looked washed out and, therefore, did not let the viewer 'feel' as if you were in the garden. Very high priced for the quality, I'm sorry to say. What a waste of good photography!
