4.0 out of 5 stars Review: The Great Gatsby, June 8, 2001
By
This review is from: Great Gatsby (Audio Cassette)
If you are a reader who likes books with a combination of a little mystery and scandal, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, contains the best of both worlds. I liked the book for a number of reasons such as it had a good over all story plot, and I really like the 1920's and it just so happens that is the time frame for this book. Throughout the book you will find a lot of surprises such as marriages falling through because of a little scandal on the side, and money that comes with no explanation. Gatsby in and of himself has a lot of mysterious features. Even with all his money things still don't happen the best way in the end for him. Besides what might you expect to happen in the book, Fitzgerald gives more. The way he related everything to the twenties really made the book sound so much greater and everything fit in just right. It was not like his details were off because even his terminology is from the right era. As far as not liking the book, there isn't too much to complain about. But like all books, even the greats, this book had its moments. There were parts in the book that I disliked. The way that Fitzgerald ended the book, I personally didn't care for. The ending no matter what way you look at it does not ruin the book. When I reread the ending, it actually didn't seem so bad, and ends up sounding pretty good. So if a mysterious twenties novel sounds good to you, I would highly recommend The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ghatsby isn't all it seems to be., July 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Great Gatsby (Audio Cassette)
The Great Ghatsby is one of the finest examples of American Literiture ever writen. Fitzgeralds book, on the surface, seems simple. Readers are often thrown by the misplaced ethics and selfish behavior of the charictors. In fact the charictors themselves are only a small part of the important messige Fitzgerald was trying to convay. The rich symbolism suggests a deeper meaning burried in the pleasent partys, the vally of ashes, and the eyes of Dr T.J. Eckleburg. In fact, this book is really about the conflicts between east and west, the death of the American dream, and the dissapointments of the new world. Ghatsbys obsession and eventual failure with Daisy mirrored the discovery and eventual failure of the new world. The book was an incredible read, and I could easly spend years decifering it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Great Gatsby: Must Read, March 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Great Gatsby (Audio Cassette)
I did my term paper on the literature of the Depression era in US history, and Fitzgerald was one of the authors I researched. Unless one has the background and an understanding of the social problems of that time, grasping the full glory and amazing correlations in this book are impossible. Fitzgerald is incredible.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't recommend this book highly enough, March 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Great Gatsby (Audio Cassette)
I read this book when I was fifteen years old. And again when I was seventeen, then twenty-two, then... well, you get the idea. It's the kind of book that not only stands the test of time, but can survive reading and re-reading. I find something new each time, but the love that Gatsby feels for Daisy is such that it continues to haunt me. There's a blinking light near my house - every time that I see it, I think of Gatsby looking out across the water at Daisy's home. There's a billboard near my house that catches the eye every time that I pass it - and I think of the eyes on the billboard near the garage, always watching. It's a timeless story that echoes in my soul years after I first read it. Do yourself a favor and read this book.
