From the INTRODUCTION to Great Golf Courses of America

This may be a futile gesture, but I'll make it anyhow, just for the record. Read the next sentence very carefully; maybe read it twice: This book is not a ranking of the best courses in the United States! Ranking courses, as such, seems to have become a necessary evil in the past dozen years or so. And I say that as a ranking panelist for two major magazines, one in Canada and one in the U.S. In fact, I started the ranking trend in Canada when I was managing editor of Score magazine, the national golf publication. Mea culpa. Granted, there are some positive aspects to this phenomenon; not the least of which is that it sells magazines and advertising. One recent publication even goes so far as to differentiate between modern and classical courses. (Give me a break.) But I digress.

This book is a cross section of some of the best layouts in America. You stroll through these pages and visit great courses from coast to coast, enjoying the spectrum of design, history, geography, topography, and so on. Some are private, some public, some resorts. Most of us will never have a chance to play Pine Valley, Seminole, or Augusta National, but isn't it great to dream? On the other hand, anyone can play Kapalua or Harbour Town. And who knows, a golfing acquaintance may have a friend who is a member at Shinnecock Hills or Winged Foot.

Selecting and writing about the courses was just part of the procedure. Photographer Michael French, who has teamed up with me on two previous golf books, spent weeks welded to the seat of his truck, hopscotching across the country to capture the essence of the final choices. He covered almost 20,000 miles, shooting more than 400 rolls of film in the process. (No, he didn't drive to Hawaii.) He packed only the essentials into his vehicle: cameras, lenses, golf clubs, mountain bike, and ... cappuccino maker. That last item stood him in good stead when he was storm-stayed for two days in the mountains of North Carolina. In addition to fancy coffeemakers, our collaboration process also required 500 faxes, $10,000 in telephone calls, and mounds of books, scorecards, yardage guides, videos, and other resource materials.

Whether or not you agree with the courses we selected is immaterial. These choices are intended to delight the golfer's eye and ignite their imagination. We think we accomplished that goal. We hope you agree.

John Gordon

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Augusta, Cypress Point, Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, Seminole--the words are magical for golfers. Even if you'll never be able to play a round at Pine Valley, The Great Golf Courses of America will give you a taste of the good life. The 38 courses included in the book are scattered across the United States, from Oak Hill in Rochester, New York, to Spyglass Hill in Pebble Beach, California, and from Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Princeville Resort on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Each profile features color photos, maps of the overall layout, a brief history of the course, and stories about the golfers who've been fortunate enough to play there--from unlucky Porky Oliver, knocking five consecutive balls into the Pacific on the 16th hole at Cypress Point to score a 13-over-par 16, to Raymond Floyd scoring nine threes in a row, from the 6th hole to the 14th, to eventually score a 63 during the first round of the 1982 PGA Championship. This will make a handsome addition to any duffer's coffee table--but it's also guaranteed to make readers turn green with envy. --M. Stein

5.0 out of 5 stars When does volume 2 come out!, March 3, 2000
This review is from: Great Golf Courses of America (Paperback)
This is one of the quintessential golf atlases. Following on the heels of the wildly successful and equally exquisite "Great golf courses of Canada," the authors have identified and honored many of the most hallowed grounds in America.

Breathtaking photography is coupled with historical accounts and hole-by-hole analyses of close to 40 of the most famous and beautiful golf courses. Major championship venues such as Augusta, Balturol, Merion and Oakmont are represented as well as some of the great resort courses and lesser known private gems such as Prarie Dunes, Seminole, The Honors and Kapalua.

There are a few glitches. For example, Ventana Canyon's chapter features a hole by hole account of the "Mountain Course", but a map of the "Canyon Course." Also, the author need not have restricted himself to a rigid 6-page formula.

Everyone of course will also argue that many greats were left out; perhaps Coeur D'Alene, Sawgrass and Bethpage Black. Nevertheless Volume 2 is hopefully in the works. Maybe the authors might wish also to try "Great golf Courses of Great Britain and Ireland.

Augusta National Golf Club is the legacy of the finest amateur golfer ever to walk the earth: Robert Tyre Jones Jr. More familiar to most golfers as "Bobby" Jones, he teamed with two other influential individuals - Alister Mackenzie and Clifford Roberts - without whom, it could be argued, the mystique of Augusta National would never have been created. Read the first page
