Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 1-3–A splashy and colorful offering designed to inform and entertain. Chester the snail sets up a contest between his friends Gonk the toad and Beezy the lizard to see who can make the best graph, telling them that points will be given for correct math, creativity, and neatness. Beezy and Gonk explore all aspects of data management, including data collection (tallies and surveys) and the use of graphic organizers (Venn diagrams, quantity graphs, circle graphs, picture graphs, and bar graphs). In the end, readers will observe from Chester's graphically designed score sheet that the result is a tie. The lively text, delivered in large type and contained in dialogue and thought balloons, is engaging and well supported by the vivid, cartoon illustrations. An occasional photograph creates an interesting, mixed-media effect. While the story itself is informative, true instruction is provided at the end of the book where each graph's data collection and construction is carefully explained, with a page reference provided. An exciting and energetic math resource.–Robyn Walker, Elgin Court Public School, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada

From Booklist

Gr. 2-4. A snail and lizard visit Gonk the Toad in his home in an overturned flowerpot. Toad goes on to show the lizard, snail, and some other creatures how to make all sorts of graphs and diagrams in simple, understandable ways. The picture book's busy, double-page spreads feature a combination of drawings and photographs, and the animals comment on the graphing action in word balloons. In the final pages, Leedy offers more information on each of the graphs described and supplies some further graphing activities A natural for curriculum use, this is an entertaining. easy-to-follow introduction to math concepts. More About the Author

I've been writing and illustrating picture books for children for over twenty-five years. Though I majored in art in college, at the time I wasn't sure what kind of artist to be. Fortunately, it turned out that combining words and art to create picture books was a perfect career for me. Most of my books center around a particular topic such as fractions, the solar system, writing, and so on. The characters and story lines help put the subject matter into a meaningful context for young readers.

After growing up mostly in Delaware, I moved to central Florida a couple of decades ago, and currently live with my husband Andy on a three acre property with hawks, herons, and horses (the horses live next door.) We love the rustle of the pines in the breeze, the screeching of sandhill cranes flying overhead, and the chattering of many small birds that come and go as they please.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best math books I have ever seen!, January 9, 2012
I am surprised no one has reviewed this great book. I borrowed this from the library for my 4 year old son. He loves me reading this book to him. The author makes it so easy to understand graphs even a 4 year old can understand. After reading many times, now he says, "Mom, look I drew a Venn Diagram." He used a blank paper and drew an X, Y line. Then he asked me and my husband to put our foot down for him to trave on the paper. Next thing we knew, he's got 3 foot prints on the paper. Then he said, "Dad's got the biggest foot." It's a really great book. I am so glad I found this book by accident.
