Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA A detailed critical analysis of guitar innovators from the four basic genres of pop music: blues, country, jazz and rock. In a series of critical essays, Kienzle examines approximately 60 guitarists. Primary essays, four to five pages in length, cover such greats as Elmore James, Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt and Jimi Hendrix. Secondary essays are one page in length and discuss artists like Muddy Waters, Junior Barnard, Oscar Moore and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Kienzle gives detailed tracings of stylistic approach and growth interspersed with some biographical information. He also describes the individual's contribution and influence on the genre as a whole. Kienzle's knowledge, combined with a lucid text, makes this book accessible to both serious researchers and browsers alike. Text is accompanied by black-and-white photos, a selected discography and an index. Elizabeth Thurston, PGCMLS, Md.
