4.0 out of 5 stars Great music, so much for info in the booklet March 28, 2012
By Scott
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
As a Warren Haynes fan and a Tommy Bolin fan, I was tipped off about this months ago. Had to nab it asap...totally worthy and excellent music--essential for fans of guitar rock, Bolin fans, and really, really well done musically. So I click the PDF file to see the booklet--it contains a bit of the story, some great photos, proper thanks, and a nice bit from Warren on Tommy. But nowhere to be found is who plays on what. I am guessing that it was an accident, but I can hear Derek Trucks on one of the tracks (no photo of him). Not sure which ones Frampton, JB, and Luke are on, but at least there are photos of them telling me they must be on there. What happened to the detailed Deluxe book that should accompany the package? Hell, I would hope it is with the regular CD as well... JUST A HEADS UP TO DOWNLOADERS--no where on the eight page PDF is there detailed track notes giving us a glimpse on where the greats from now added their parts of Tommy's from then. Picked out Haynes on a few of them would just be nice to read and know who is on what. Thanks for a great listen--excellent listen though... If there is ever a fix, please let us that have purchased it as a download get a free page(s) containing the notification.

1.0 out of 5 stars I love Bolin, but... July 26, 2012
By Kenny
Format:Audio CD
this album is disappointing. I know, I know... it looks like I'm the only one who's gonna have any kind of negative comments and for that, I feel terrible. But this is my review and I won't be dishonest just because I dig Tommy Bolin's music.

My first exposure to Tommy Bolin was with Zephyr. Yep, the first album - in a huge stack of albums from a buddy's older brother who was off to college. Also in that huge stack of albums was Deep Purple's "Come Taste The Band" AND the Moxy album. This was the late 70's and I had no idea Tommy was already gone. All I knew was that I very much enjoyed his style of playing and he has been a huge influence on my own guitar style. Since that time, I've managed to get my hands on nearly everything that's been available featuring his musical skill and vision. I guess I said all of that in an attempt to get a bit of "street cred" and to let folks know I'm not a casual admirer of Mr. Bolin's work.

Let me start by saying that I have much respect for the intent of the project and for the stellar guitarists who took part in this. But that's pretty well as far as I'm willing to go with that.

The Grind: Not bad and Frampton does a fine enough job.

Teaser: I love the version chosen for the album, but Warren Haynes (whom I've seen live numerous times and really admire) just butchers the tune. I don't know why he chose to do what he did on this track.

Dreamer: Myles Kennedy did an excellent job on this one. I have to say this was more along the lines of what I thought the entire album was gonna be like. Easily the best track on this project.

Tracks 4 through 6: Terrible. On all fronts. These tracks are just ruined.

5.0 out of 5 stars good stuff here.... March 29, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
i bought the deluxe version and was very happy i did. Disc one sounds great. Good sound, well produced. Great guitar solos. The 2 Fandango songs are great, The Myles Kennedy sung "Dreamer' is a stand out. But the stuff on the second disc made me dizzy with delight! The Marching Bags 1-4 are astounding. Great bluesy rock, filled with solos and great sounds. The whole car was filled with sound while i was listening to it. Lush and full. Can't stop listening to it.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's a Teaser, but... April 26, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Great Gypsy Soul is a worthy effort to bring the music of Tommy Bolin to a new generation of guitar fans, but it falls far short of the appeal of Bolin's original 1975 Teaser L.P. Cut by cut, each come up short when compared those released either Teaser or Teaser Deluxe. The backing tracks, particularly the vocals, are just not up to the quality of those used on the original album, and unfortunately it detracts mightily from the finished product. Plus it is sacrilege to even attempt a rework of Savannah Woman. The real sin is that the original Teaser is not readily available. That's a problem that will hopefully be remedied by attention that Great Gypsy Soul may bring to Bolin's body of work.

The good news here is found on the Deluxe Edition's second disc. It's great guitar work, across the board, on Flying Fingers and each movement of Marching Bag. It's a way to enjoy modern Bolin jams without the creepy "bring out yer dead" feeling of disc one. Bolin was great guitar player who must've been a selfish man with self-destructive tendencies that caused his quick demise. It's appropriate to understand Bolin's place in guitar music and this album should succeed in whetting the appetites of young guitar fans and players.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gypsy With Soul May 9, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I never met Tommy but his very kind brother Johnnie made sure I knew about this album and I'm glad he did. Some very cool new twists on these timeless classics. Not all of them better than the originals but every one is a solid reason for buying this CD. I was a fan long before moving to and eventually from Sioux City, Iowa and I like how these songs take me back to the small, local, annual festivals that honored this outstandingly talented man and the feeling i had when I first discovered his music. It's very fresh.
